A Talk With Dina Renee
We just spoke with Dina Renee about her latest release and touched on some important artist topics. Here's what happened.
TSWS: Can't Let You Go is something everyone can relate to at one time or another. Why did you decide to release the song?
Dina: I had written it at a time where I just felt so disrespected by the guy I was dating. He kept stringing me along and ghosting me and then coming back with all the words I had ever wanted to hear. I really knew I should stay away and value myself more but I was just so hopelessly into him and knew I was being kind of pathetic letting him in again. It was kind of like therapy. Looking back I don’t think I’d make that same mistake again.
TSWS: Was it cathartic?
Dina: It honestly was because I was just so heart broken and feeling so helpless and controlled. I’m an empath and I attract guys that tend to be narcissists. Writing this song was a release for me to kind of stop letting people in like this.
TSWS: You have a great voice, how do you keep up with it?
Dina: Thank you very much. I try to do vocal exercises everyday to practice and I am always singing karaoke or making up my own songs everywhere I go. I carry a microphone in my purse and also in my car..normal I know
TSWS: How often are you writing?
Dina: I write everyday because I am constantly in my feelings and being creative the only way to release that is through art in some way. When I was growing up I took art classes and that was more my release because I was too shy to let people hear me sing. But I’ve always loved writing. When I was in 4th grade I remember I won a gold medal in my state for a children’s book I wrote. I later majored in journalism in college so I guess writing has always been something I love. I want to publish a few books one day soon.
TSWS: Are you writing with someone now?
Dina: There isn’t a particular person I write songs with but I would love to find more people to co write with. I love writing with people.
What's next? I have a show this Saturday at Molly Malones. And I can’t wait to release a music video ASAP.
