Rose Starring Releases "Denial"
Talking with Rose Starring about her new single "Denial" was a good time!
TSWS: Your single Denial is a vibe. Tell us what the influence behind the song was for you?
Rose: Thank you so much! “Denial” was a product of the less than ideal circumstances I was in towards the end of last year. I was still in college and working two jobs when my boyfriend of almost a year ended our relationship abruptly. I didn’t have time to process the breakup as one normally would because I still had to work anytime I had “time off” from school. I had the idea to write a song that encapsulated the feeling that I was living in as a way to help me process it, and so the idea for “Denial” and the Stages of Grief EP was born!
TSWS: Is it easy to translate how you're feeling into your music?
Rose: Sometimes it comes naturally to me, but sometimes I need space and time to process how I want to express how I feel! Honestly, most of the time that I feel like I have “writer’s block,” it’s usually because I’m trying to write about something other than what’s genuinely weighing on my mind. Once I get those ideas out, it’s much easier to find creative inspiration in my daily life.
TSWS: What is your process for writing music?
Rose: A lot of the time, a clever phrase will pop into my head with a little “hook” that I know I need to write around. However, many times it just comes down to me sitting down at my piano or in front of my journal and simply writing whatever comes to mind! At the end of the day, I just try to find a way to express how I’m feeling through sound as well as through my words.
TSWS: When do you know when a song is finally finished?
Rose: When it gets to the point where the song is getting stuck in my head, I know I need to get it ready to be put out! Sometimes a song is finished long before I have everything ready for distribution, but I usually consider it “finished” when I’d be comfortable playing it at a writer’s round or show!
TSWS: Favorite fan reaction to Denial?
Rose: I’ve definitely been the most moved by the people, especially strangers, who have reached out and told me that they were going through the same thing right now and would be listening to the song to get them through it. For me, that’s what it’s all ultimately about: the effect your music can have on others.
TSWS: Who is your go to artist to listen to right now?
Rose: Lately, I’ve been exploring Mitski and Sevdaliza’s discographies! They’re both such beautiful and talented songstresses.
TSWS: Dream collab for new music?
Rose: It’s so hard to pick just one! I’d have to say, I’d die for the opportunity to work with Billie Eilish and FINNEAS one day. Another artist that excites me so much right now is Dorian Electra. Their style and limitlessness is so inspiring!
