Abi Mia "Make Myself Tall" Premier
A new single from Abi Mia portrays a powerful and uplifting message in the form of a power ballad with both rock and pop undertones that shine through underneath a heavily passionate vocal approach.
"Make Myself Tall" is an honest na danthemic track with a ton of life and a massively inspirational chorus that makes you want to stand up and put your lighter in the air.
The song has a lot of breathing and climaxes that hit hard and really show the artists knack for writing hooks that have meaning and boast some soul.
This single is an absolute powerhouse and belongs inthe end credits of a film somewhere.
Abi Mia has a serious set of pipes on her that can attract you from across the room and bring you towards the sound within seconds.
We had the pleasure of reviewing her last single "Here To Stay" in which we mention her complete love for her craft and how she puts nothing but heart into her performances and songwriting and "Make Myself Tall" is no exception.
As a matter of fact, this one pushes that envelope even further.
The artist keeps cranking out songs that have up there with the heavy hitters and is such an outstanding performer to keep an eye out for.
"Make Myself Tall" has some layers to peel back and we wanted to talk about the song with her a bit more. Here is what happened.
TSWS: I wanted to get things going with your new single "Make Myself Tall". This one was very uplifting and had that inspirational vibe to go along with it's sort of anthemic pop feel. What is this song about? Where did this come from exactly?
I am so glad you found 'Make Myself Tall' uplifting, that was definitely the intention with this one! It is about the realisation that it is in our power to make ourselves tall, to have confidence in our way of doing things and not to let someone else put us down for not doing things their way. We can walk away from people who don't support us and just because we do things differently does not mean we are wrong. We all have choices and approaches that work best for us and it is up to us to stand up for ourselves even if someone claiming to be your friend puts you down. The inspiration for this did come from a situation I was in where a 'friend' kept putting my decisions down whilst pretending to be helping me out. A true friend would not do this and this song is based on the realisation that we don't need to listen or keep these types of people around us. I also had realised recently especially within the music industry that you will come across people that try and put you down because you seem like 'competition' to them. I believe that all musicians have something unique to offer and just because one is being successful doesn't mean you can't too! There is room for all of us and we should lift each other up and to be confident enough in our own abilities not to feel threatened by others.
TSWS: I love that the song has a rocked out feel behind it. Was this the plan?
Yes that was 100% the plan! I wanted this to be a powerful song to inspire and empower the listener! When I first heard the final product it gave me so much energy and motivation to keep working hard (I was literally dancing around my flat!) and this is definitely the energy I wanted to give to the listener!
TSWS: Who are you listening to right now?
I am listening to so many artists at the moment! I am trying to be inspired but different genres and styles as much as possible within my own musical approach! The mainstream artists I have listened to the most recently have been Demi Lovato, Sara Barelilles, BTS, Zoe Wees, Alicia Keys, Dimash, Evanescence and more! I am also listening to many up and coming artists that I have connected with on Instagram such as Marigold Ingot and Sallok and James. I love being inspired but both famous artists and artists on a similar journey to myself.
TSWS: How has the lockdown affected you musically?
For me lockdown is what kickstarted my creativity after about a 10 year break! We have had 3 lockdowns in the UK and it has definitely given me plenty of time and inspiration to write. It got me back into music and for the first time I am really pushing it as a full time career. It has hindered my ability to start performing live but I feel it has given me a great time that I wouldn't have had to be creative, record singles and release music consistently to build up a fan base online. Hopefully once things open up I can begin to perform live and build up more that way!
TSWS: Are you a singer first? Or did you start with guitar or piano?
I had a few piano lessons when I was much younger but that quickly turned into songwriting and singing when I saw that was where my true passion and skills were. I don't read music well and I very much consider myself a singer who can accompany myself on piano but I am much more confident with my vocal skills than with the piano having worked a lot more over the years on technique.
TSWS: How do family and friends react to your songs?
Even though my pursuing music is new and different they are very supportive of my music and always give me a lot of encouragement and motivation to continue. My more musical friends usually give me great feedback about more specific parts of the songs they enjoyed and overall I get lots of lovely comments and support from my friends and family. I am very grateful for this!
TSWS: This was a killer song to start off the day! Is part of why you write a song like this because you want to help others?
Thank you. I appreciate that! Yes 100% - one of the main reasons why I write and why I love music in general is because it can really inspire, empower, connect with peoples emotions and really influence our actions for the better. A lot of the time we have experiences and feelings that can make us feel very isolated or alone and through my music I want people to realise we all have these experiences and we can build ourselves up, have confidence in our own choices and not let others put us down!
TSWS: You wake up in the middle of the night starving. What's your go to midnight snack? (A question of character)
This is a hard one! To be honest I have never done this but if I were to I would most likely have a protein shake! As a personal trainer and weight lifter this is often an extra snack that I may have and I can have the protein boost, digest easily and get back to sleep!
TSWS: What sort of non-musical things inspire you to write songs?
I am inspired by so many things! As a songwriter anything I encounter in my day could be used as inspiration! I am often inspired by events going on in the world, books I am reading, something a friend/family member has been through and I feel is inspiring and want to write about! Nature and beauty also inspires me - if I am out walking and the weather is beautiful or looking back at holiday photos can really inspire my creativity too!
TSWS: I always feel like your childhood is a major part of who you become later in life. What films did you love growing up?
Yes I totally agree that your childhood is a major part of who we become! I used to love light hearted romantic comedies and films where there was an underdog who succeeded such as Princess Diaries, Legally Blind and Miss Congeniality! I was also brought up watching very British comedies such as Fawlty Towers, Dad's Army and Yes Prime MInister. I definitely developed quite a dry sense of humor from that! I also loved watching classic musicals such as The Sound Of Music, Mary Poppins, The Wizard Of Oz and many more!
TSWS: Will you be releasing more songs this year?
Yes I will definitely be releasing more songs this year! I already have the next 3 singles lined up and I can't wait to share them! I would also like to start working on an EP this year but we shall see how the year develops in terms of being able to work more (coming out of lockdown) to then be able to fund it! Either way there is a lot more music to come!
TSWS: Any videos on the way?
At the moment I have no plans to do a music video. I want to focus on writing and recording a good number of songs first, start performing and then hopefully in the future I can do a great music video! They are big projects and I want to make sure I can give everything I have to it! I do have a few lyric videos for my released singles out on my YouTube channel though so people can now sing a long with me!
