A New single And Video from Anna Thoresen
The latest single release from Anna Thoresen comes through with a very unique breed of honesty that can hit home for some, and it's that boisterous approach to truth and the emotion that comes along with it that really pulls you into this track.
"Voodoo Doll" is a single that takes elements of rock, pop, alternative edginess and undertone, and loads of soul and R&B, rolls it into one song that comes through with a vivacious approach, but again, this very personal feeling of honesty gives you a lot to chew on.
The song delves into relationships and being hurt. It's a track that feels like it's about a situation where one person is getting treated very badly and for a long time as well. It's about rising up and finally saying that you're not going to take it anymore and fighting back, or just leaving.
The song depicts the element of wanting that person to feel the same kind of pain that you have been feeling all this time.
This is done by way of very wonderfully woven lyrics. The way she articulates her lyrics really helps paint this thick picture, and she's very unafraid throughout this entire thing.
It's quite a vulnerable track, honestly. She's kind of letting it all out there and not doing it with boundaries set. She's letting it all bleed out so that she can help herself become new again, and whether or not this is based on reality, a lot of us can sort of understand where she's coming from, if we've been in similar situations.
Getting mistreated in relationships doesn't just mean physical abuse. It's verbal, emotional, and more. A lot of us have been in relationships where we were abused without even realizing it, for such a long time that one day we just snapped out of it.
Anna can put this into song so well that it's impossible to turn away from.
The song features clean guitars, but again, this sort of alternative underbelly to the whole thing has just a light touch of edginess, and this is also coming from the vocal performance and the sentiment of the song itself.
The message behind the track calls for a little bit of aggression, and she's able to really deliver that.
Her vocals are super soulful; they can get very big when they want to, coming through with a bountiful and punch-packing sort of approach, but they can also be subtle and smooth during these sadder or more solid moments of the song because that's the emotion that's happening then.
So, her vocal approaches sort of follow the emotion of the song.
This is a track that definitely comes through with that heavy R&B sort of overtone, but the pop element is really strong as well.
This is almost like a genre-bending kind of song. It belongs on pop radio stations everywhere, that's for sure, but it's not just a pop song in general.
You can hear a lot of different influences coming into play as the song unfolds, and the hook or chorus of the song is very powerful and sort of sticks with you for hours after the song has ended.
This is a very full-bodied track that hits hard when it needs to and comes through with this character-riddled aesthetic that you just can't shake off.
Now, the music video is amazing. The way that they put this thing together was really perfect, simply because she was able to depict herself as two different characters in the video itself.
One is the powerful pop star that everyone wants to know, be a part of, and follow. The other is simply not.
The way that both characters are depicted in the video makes perfect sense for the sentiment of the song. The popstar is playing what's on the outside. It's what people see on social media or out in public. The other character is a little more beaten down, and that's the not-so-public character. The one that's getting abused and going through the emotional roller coaster that comes with it.
Now, all this is just how I interpreted everything, from the song to the video.
Others may take it a bit differently. The song and the video both can have different meanings depending on who's watching and listening.
For me, this is what made sense and what the song was about when I heard it.
But you should definitely watch the video and listen to the song so that you can see what it means to you.
The video is right here below, don't skip it. Watch it.
