BAT FLATTERY DELIVERS A NEW SINGLE
A new release from Bat Flattery gives off a damn near perfect late '90s underground indie and alternative rock vibe and soundscape and they do it with this amazing approach that gives off an electric energy and this sort of character that grabs at you and holds tight.
"Onibaba Mask" waste no time coming in swinging as the song starts straight off with full band effort right from the get-go and vocals that belt, along with this guitar tone that already gives the song such a massive sonic drive and I love this because right from the very start of the song you pretty much know what you're in for.
I do have to say though, there are a few surprises around the corners of this song and some heavier sections that also give me a little hint of nostalgia here and there and this is because I grew up in a certain time. When finding the underground alternative rock bands was the thing to do.
These guys make me think of bands like a Cursive or Thursday. These are the kinds of bands that you would find in magazines and read about them and then go and hunt down songs on LimeWire or Napster for example.
This was a very unique time. In music and is now long gone however, these guys capture that specific aesthetic so well that it does indeed make me feel nostalgic as soon as the song comes in.
Not only is this approach now but they do it with this live energy feel like all the players are feeding off of each other the entire time and this gives the song the feeling of being alive.
The track is not without its bits of catchiness here and there and there are a lot of memorable sections in the track that show different time signatures and breakdown sections that really just let the song feel sort of expansive and you get a really good feel for how these guys must be in a live setting indeed.
Listening to the song does make you want to go see them perform it live straight off the bat.
If the energy like this is captured on record so well then seeing them live must be a real face-melter, and that's what I would want seeing this band.
Having said all that, this is very smart songwriting and arrangement as well and you can tell that this is a band that has a true love for their craft and when I say that I don't just mean playing guitar or singing or smashing the drums, I mean writing songs to put out into the world so people can jump around the room to them.
It's been a while since I've heard a song with this much drive to it and with this amazing aesthetic built in so well that you can almost feel those influences coming through in the music itself.
Upon listening to this track, I took a little bit of a deep dive into the band's back catalog and I'm glad that I did because last year amazing.
This is for people that love a certain classic, almost emotionally driven, youthful alternative and indie rock that has as much edginess as it does character.
It's got heavy sections that really pound, and each element of the song and instrumentation seems to complement each other including the vocals.
It's like everything gives even more drive to the song and I think that these guys really have a unique way of pushing the envelope so they can get to that high octane sort of energy that the song needs to come through with.
A blistering single from a killer band that I am definitely going to be paying a lot more attention to from here on out.
Check this track out as soon as you can and then, listen to the self-titled Bat Flattery release from last year.
Don't be afraid to turn it up.
