An Interview With Bennett
We recently had the chance to talk with Bennett about his single "Lightning".
TSWS: Hi Bennett! Thank you for speaking with me today!
Bennett: Thanks so much for having me!
TSWS: You recently released your song 'Lightning'! Will you tell us a bit about it?
Bennett: Absolutely! So "Lightning" is probably tied for the favorite song of mine that I've made. How it came about is actually a first for me. I had a dream one night about a music video. I remember I woke up and needed to make this a reality, but I didn't have a song for this particular video. So I got on my computer and I made a beat that I felt fit the overall vibe that I got in my dream. From there, it was giving me real r&b sexy vibes, so I wanted to make sure to capture that in my lyrics. I knew I wanted to make the song about sharing an intimate, personal moment with the girl I love, but I didn't want to over-sexualize the song, so I made pretty much everything into metaphors. I added lots of harmonies and adlibs, which I always wanted to do in a song, definitely Little Mix/Chris Brown inspired. I recorded it and then mixed and mastered the track. After a couple of weeks of work on it, "Lightning" came to fruition.
TSWS: Now you are releasing a video for it as well correct?!
Bennett: Yes, I just released the music video on May 21st, which I'm so excited for people to enjoy.
TSWS: What is the concept of the video?
Bennett: So like I had mentioned earlier, the visualization of the video came to me in a dream. After creating the song itself, I knew that lightning and the visual aspect of what lightning physically is needed to be present in the video. In my dream, I saw flashing lights of all colors, but with a simple background and set. Lights and lots of them were my go-to for this. For example, when a tornado is about to strike, the sky becomes this sort of greenish, dark, haze and I knew that I wanted to bring the storm aspect into this video. I also wanted to make it sexy because after all, it's a sexy r&b track, so I wanted to bring out that side of myself by adding some dance moves, having my shirt off, and just getting really into the song itself. I also knew that I wanted what was captured on camera to be pretty much the final product, which meant minimal editing so that's why I went with so many different shots with different lights attached to it.
TSWS: Sounds like you stay really busy! How do you find balance between artist life and normal life?
Bennett: Yes, I definitely try to stay as productive as possible. I try to find the balance between artist life and normal life by just pausing sometimes in what I'm currently doing. Whether it is spending time with my family or going for a drive to clear my head, I always try to take time for myself away from the studio setting. Sometimes a much-needed break is the way to go for me. I can get caught up in my work very quickly and before I know it, I'm burnt out. So the more that I'm conscious of how I'm feeling, the better the balance.
TSWS: How does it feel to be seeing your hard work paying off?
Bennett: It's a dream come true. I'm definitely not where I'd like to be yet, but I'll tell you, years of hard work are starting to finally pay off and that shows me what I'm doing, the long hours and dedication, is really the game-changer. Consistency is everything. I'm not where I started anymore, I've built a fanbase for myself, and met some really amazing people along the way, and that in itself feels so good. To really see the progress and hard work pay off shows me I'm doing something right and to keep going no matter what the circumstances are.
TSWS: What keeps you inspired?
Bennett: My goals and not being where I want to be in life is a big inspiration. I think that when you are set on what you want in life and are willing to do any and everything to make that happen, that's really all the inspiration you need. I obviously have other things that keep me inspired too. My best friend Hazel is my biggest cheerleader. I don't think I've ever had anyone who rides for me the way she does. She pushes me to keep going no matter what and I think that alone is a major inspiration. I don't want to let go of the potential that she sees in me because I finally see it in myself. My family. serving God through the gifts He's given me, and wanting to make a genuine change in this world is also my everyday inspiration.
TSWS: What has been the coolest part of this process so far?
Bennett: The coolest part would probably be watching everything happen right in front of me. Years of hard work and endless hours of just learning how to perfect my craft have been such motivating factors, which is definitely a really cool part. I've met such amazing people, worked with such talented people, and even had a few meetings with Republic Records too. I grew up down the street from their offices and I never knew what was in the building they are located in until I went for my meeting. Walking up to that building, and seeing the bus stop I used to wait at in the mornings to go to school, having it come full circle, that just might be the coolest part so far.
TSWS: Any upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for?
Bennett: I'm currently working on an EP. It's going to feature some really talented artists which I'm really excited about. I'm starting to get the music together now and aiming for a July release for that. With all the success of my music in the last 5 months, I know people are really going to feel this album. Following the release of that, I will definitely be shooting a music video to the first single off the EP. So a new EP and music video is definitely something to look out for.
TSWS: Please let everyone know where they can find you and your music!
Bennett: You can find me and all my music on my website, www.imbennettmusic.
