Bicentennial Drug Lord is back with a fresh single that takes a very unique direction and gives off a much more personal perspective, focusing on having elements of life fall apart and feeling kind of hopeless about it in a sense. But it also hits the sentiment of putting that back together and how it feels to go through that process.
One of the reasons I really liked this was because of the lyrics. The lyrics really paint a great picture as the song unravels, and I just dig how open it is. It's very honest, it hits a certain level of vulnerability, and comes through with a sort of softer, almost folk-style soundscape.
It's acoustic guitars and vocals that grow into more elements as the song plays through. By the time you get towards the second half or the end section of the track, it's got live percussion, more instruments, and synth pads that are sort of flowing through it and giving it a cinematic, robust style feel, which works amazingly because it pushes the emotional aspect of it even more.
I really love how the song builds up to that lush aesthetic, and it doesn't take away from those lyrics whatsoever; if anything, it helps set a particular mood for the lyrics as well.
As I mentioned earlier, the song feels like it's about putting your life back together, in a sense. And as the song plays, it gets warmer musically, as that feeling of putting your life back together takes place more and more.
The song is called "Thaw", and it's a word that they use to describe how it feels to regain yourself again.
Now, this is how the song was interpreted by me. If someone else listens to the song, they may take it in a little differently than I did.
For me, it made perfect sense in this matter. I actually connected with it quite a bit because I feel like a lot of people can relate to that theme or sentiment.
There are a lot of times in life when you feel like things fall apart, and it's a process to get yourself to start putting it back together again.
The song comes through with the warm tonality it needs to help push that sentiment, and because of that, the mood is set, the vibe is there, and it all works out.
I can hear a little bit more classic rock undertone in the influence when it comes to this single. I get a bit of a familiar vibe from it because it delivers a sort of semi-vintage feel when it comes to the tones of the instruments and how the vocals were recorded.
The track also boasts this classic horn section that is a little bit in the background but still very evident, helping the progression thicken up and adding beautiful layers of texture to the song.
This was a track I listened to a few times in a row just to pick up on all the lyrics, and I would suggest listening to this one with headphones on as well. It's sort of engulfing you that way.
Again, this does have a bit of a cinematic feel to it at times, especially in the way that it grows and builds, but I think it's the emotional backbone that really locks everything in.
It's a song that came from a genuine place and needed to be displayed.
The track also holds on to one of my favorite aspects about the band in general, which is their pop sensibility.
This was wonderfully done, and I don't think I've heard a song like this from them yet, so I love this direction and how it showcases the different approach to their songwriting.
Definitely check this out when you can. You can hear exactly what I'm talking about.
