A Fresh Release from Born Soul
A fresh release from Born Soul delivers a particular brand of honesty that comes through with a crossover of old-school and new-school hip-hop styles and rap flows that come through consciously and with great detail a lot of the time.
The Vybe King EP covers a lot of ground and when he wants to he ends up bringing up memories and getting very descriptive with everything so that you can actually picture things vividly in your head as you're listening to songs unfold and I think that's incredibly connective but you also have to think fast because some of these flows are pretty quick.
Throughout the release, Born Soul goes through a variety of different rap approaches and styles all with his own twist and attitude so that you know it's him when you hear it.
I love how he goes through so much within one track lyrically and his phrasing with those lyrics is incredible and one of the reasons why this album is so addictive.
The artist can bounce between those beats so well that the lyrics become a rhythm themselves and that is something that takes a lot of practice and attention to detail.
When you listen to the record, you feel like there's a lot of attention to detail and its creation but you also feel that natural forward-moving flow of it all as well.
The thing that this record has the most of is character. There's so much personality and character strewn across the landscape of this EP that you can't turn away from it and a lot of these tracks feel almost like they're coming from certain chapters of his life.
This is one of the reasons you should be listening to this record as a whole.
Listening to one or two songs is fine and may give you a little bit of a gist of what you can expect, but it will not give you the full spectrum of what the whole EP gives.
Again, he goes through these different styles, and with those comes production that varies as well.
He's got everything from fresh current beats to '90s classic style beats as well and with each track, he kind of morphs his character to match that energy.
This is also really important because sometimes you have a track and a production that's high energy but the vocals are low energy and it takes away from the track as a whole.
With this release, the artist matches that energy and also, at times, pushes even harder to give everything more drive which works perfectly.
As you listen to the different tracks you can hear certain influences and those peek through here and there but again, some of the stuff feels almost nostalgic in a way.
He's got a really particular aesthetic to the way the record was put together and I feel like it was a vision he had in his head that came to fruition.
This took some planning for sure and you can tell that he was ready to get a lot of inner thoughts off of his chest which makes for a record that gives you a lot to chew on.
Some layers can be peeled back, the record has tons of charisma, it's got a great swagger and attitude, and it's got that personality that has a way of just grabbing you.
I love a record of any genre that has a lot to say and that has songs that come from someplace real.
Born Soul is the kind of artist who gives little pieces of himself on his tracks and I think that's a rarity these days so when you come across it it's kind of refreshing.
This was a lush, bountiful, robust, vivacious, slightly fiery, very honest, and super descriptive rap EP that is released with fewer boundaries than you may be used to.
Again I would highly suggest listening to this record in full so that you get everything you're supposed to get out of it and when you do so, either turn it nice and loud or listen to it with headphones on because it's the best way to listen.
Check this record out right now and remember where you heard it first.
