An Interview With Bri McKay
A new single from Bri McKay brings out an absolutely lush form of retro pop that comes through aesthetically perfect with a wondrous array of instrumentation and an endlessly catchy vibe.
"At The Bay" feels like a summer single for sure and takes on the form of a bright and danceable pop song that has the ability to cause memories of your own to pop into your head at random/
This is likely because of that nostalgic undertone that the song keeps to and it's done with such an authentic style that it almost feels like you've been listening to it on the radio for years now.
You can tell there's plenty of heart that went into this track and that the artist has a real love for her craft as well because the song has a particular energy that fits perfectly.
The track also has a wonderful warmth to it that is as addictive as its catchiness as well as these amazing melodies and hooks that stick with you for hours after the song has ended.
McKay is able to create her music with such a unique palette and it all helps you visualize things as the song plays on.
This single hits a lot of sweet spots for me and it has such a unique way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to.
One thing is for sure, McKay knows how to write a song where you can really close your eyes and be in a different place all together which is completely refreshing.
You get that sensation of being on the beach on a sunny summer day, staring up at the clouds and you get this sense of peacefulness in a way.
She has really captured that youthful pop feel so well that you can swim through it.
This song is almost like a love letter to the artist that inspired it and it does an outstanding job of recreating that sensation you felt when listening to those artists.
A beautifully woven single that was performed with a colorful and honest pop delivery, "At The Bay" is going to be an anthem for this summer.
With such a great single, we wanted to have a sit down with Bri McKay to find out what really inspired this song and what may be coming next for the artist.
Here's what happened.
TSWS: - Okay, let's start with "At The Bay"! This song has such a lively pop feel to it and touched on a retro style as well! Where did this track come from?
I wanted to create a song that was dreamy and sentimental and a bit ethereal. In my experience writing has come from what I know and/or observe; basically the truth then sprinkle a little imagination. I took a moment in time and made it into what I wanted.
TSWS: - What kind of things really inspire other songs for you?
I’m naturally a deep emotional person but Im also pretty private about my deepest truths. My music allows me to express the things I wouldn’t normally say in an everyday conversation. The world, how I perceive it and my experience within it is my inspiration. Music helped (and still does) me get through some of the darkest nights of my life and it only feels right to give my listeners that light back in return.
TSWS: - This single has some great styles on it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?
I am blessed to have some amazing people on my team that help to make each song the best it can be. I do my best not to mimic any certain artist and create a sound that is just…Bri. I have lots of influences and artists I admire but my music could be described as a mix of Kelly Clarkson, P!NK, and Demi Lovato. They’re all strong vocalists, with emotional, meaningful songs that have feet in both pop and rock. I also really enjoy electronic/house music.
TSWS: - What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?
I’m an avid runner/hiit workout enthusiast. Working out is so important to me for my mental health + I get to listen to my favorite tunes while I do it. You can also find me reading - like all the time!
TSWS: - Who's in your headphones right now?
I have quite a variety but I’m currently blasting a lot of Against the Current, Tilian, and some of my favorite musical tunes.
TSWS: - Are you doing any live performances right now?
I am performing at a creative’s brunch in the middle of June and am planning a few other things as well. Stay tuned to find out more, of course.
TSWS: - Did you go to a big studio for this or do you have a home set up where you record your stuff?
One of my friends has a studio that I go to. It’s called FourHorseman Studio. I trust them with the recording quality, equipment, intelligent opinion, and most importantly, they make me feel comfortable in the booth which is vital!
TSWS: - What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
I have several things under my belt at the moment both musically and acting wise (I’m an actress too). Im not able to speak about some of them until more details are smoothed out, but I’m excited as always to bring more entertainment and live a life doing what I love and was meant to do.
TSWS: - Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?
It’s always the thing to say “I couldn’t do this without you” and “I love you” but when I say this, it’s the absolute truth. I put this music out to inspire you as I have found inspiration. To motivate as I have found motivation. To give you something to smile or cry to, to release whatever it is that you feel. My dearest hope is that my music gives you a friend who can be there for you in whatever way you need. If you’re not already listening, I welcome you to dive into the tunes and follow me on socials.
