An Interview With Bruce Wayne Carl
A new single from Bruce Wayne Carl brings out that fresh classic rock jive with funky guitars and a deep groove beat wise to go along with that howling vocal that feels like a live performance right in your face.
"Ulysses Song" has some infectious melodies and the song manages to really build up the longer it goes as organs come through and add this extra gusto and lushnes to the track as guitars also begin to become fuller.
Soon enough you have blues guitar solos ringing out and rocking through the verses of the track and when the chorus comes in it just feels cinematic and impactful with both the vocals and guitars just belting out with heart.
The song certainly has heart to it by the way and you can feel that through the music.
The organs also give us a killer solo and it has a great feel and adds a lot to the song's progression and approach.
This was fun, and had this genuine feel to it as Carl writes a song that's like a love letter to classic rock of the late 70's.
He's got that swagger and he's got that passion and that's part of why it sounds so good. It really works simply because of his love for the music shining through so much.
The guitar really has style to it and it rocks like an arena rock powerhouse by the end.
With such a massive release, we wanted to talk shop with Carl to find out where this came from and what may be coming next for the artist.
Here's what we found out.
TSWS: Welcome back Bruce! Let's talk about Ulysses Song first. This track really boasted a classic rock feel and was super genuine to the aesthetic. Where did this song come from?
I chanced to hear a song some time ago by Loreena Mckennitt called “Penelopes Song”, and I was taken in by how beautiful it was. I’ve always been a fan of epic literature, and so I thought: wouldn’t it be great to make a counterpart song from Odysseus’s perspective? And the idea was born. A great story like that will always have relevance.
TSWS: How do you record your songs? Do you use a home studio?
I actually use an affordable studio in in Aurora called Module Overload. The studio technician Jamie Hillyer
is a great guy, and gives me lots of freedom and control over the entire mix and final product.
TSWS: Are you performing everything or just guitar and vocals on this?
In this case I did everything but the lead guitar and the lead keyboard.
TSWS: Do you ever collaborate with other people when making songs?
I was lucky enough to work with two very talented musicians on this piece. Sean Malkasian who plays with
Mothatung was on guitar and did a stellar job. And Xue Castano who is with Soul Ray, and Blove Experience, also did an amazing performance on the keys. They are great musicians, and I heartily recommend looking into their works.
TSWS: What's your absolute favorite part about doing what you do?
Well, it’s a lot of work. But just the fact that I am able to create, is what makes it worthwhile.
TSWS: Are you working on more upcoming stuff already?
Yes. Always. I have several songs that are being worked on right now, and I’m auditioning people to
create a band that can put out a very big sound.
TSWS: How about any music videos? Can we expect anything in that arena?
Yes, Haha! That is also in works. But it would be nice if there were actually 8 days in the week.
TSWS: Do you get people to perform any of this live with you?
I lost a lot of time this summer by being forced to find a new place to live, but it worked out for the better, and as the band comes together, and gets practiced, there will be live performances.
TSWS: Feels like you're a guitar player at heart. What kind of guitars and gear do you use to record?
I can’t say that I have anything too special. I have a Yamaha acoustic-electric guitar and a vintage Schecter guitar, as well as a bass guitar, etc. I always have believed that it’s the feeling driving the instrument that is the most important thing.
TSWS: Are there any other passions you have beides songwriting and performing music?
I’ve always loved visual art and good literature, and I enjoy all kinds of sports as well. Just now I am getting back into rock climbing which is something that have always loved.
TSWS: Anything you may want to express to fans of the music before we go?
If you’re reading this, thank you. I appreciate you. Thank you for being part of my story. And rest assured, that if you don’t see something posted, that it is because I am fighting hard behind the scenes, just to secure another day to be allowed to create something beautiful.
