Cagri Raydemir Delivers An Emotionally Bound EP
with Some Beautifully Intense Performances
A beautifully woven new EP from Cagri Raydemir delivers some lush textures and tones along with brilliant songwriting that really expresses a lot of human condition, emotional backbone, and this wonderfully cinematic underbelly that seems to always be there.
The Clarification of Boundaries EP blends elements of folk and singer-songwriter, with jazz and contemporary pop, bringing together a series of genres that help the artist create an atmosphere that is immersive and can easily swallow you up.
Of course, I mean this in the best way possible. These songs are engulfing, and it feels good to get engulfed by them. There's so much great emotion being put forward throughout the course of this record that you can't help but get pulled into it all.
Cagri's vocal performance says it all. His vocals are sort of intense at times. You can feel and hear the emotion in his voice as he performs, even on the first track, "Live and Let Live."
There's also a lot of vast undertone happening. There are elements of stripped-down appeal. For example, this track in particular is focused a lot more on acoustic guitar and vocals than anything else. It has a bit of a stripped-down sort of vibe, but it helps put you in the moment with the song itself.
You're paying attention to those lyrics, you're put into the story, and you can connect with the feeling of it all.
Listening to this song alone is enough to showcase how the artist is able to portray instrumental moves that line up with the lyrics that he's giving out.
It's kind of poetic, and the whole record has a bit of a graceful tonality to it. There's a warmth as well, but the performances are sort of smooth and elegant, in a sense.
The fact that you have a bit of a stripped-down feel also gives the whole release a one-on-one aesthetic. It feels almost like you're watching a performance. The energy is alive, and you get attached to that pretty quickly.
Now, songs like this one certainly hit climactic points. There are layers of vocals that come through, really intense moments, and other instrumentation like trumpet, for example.
The trumpet shows up in a few songs across the release, and I feel like it's a beautiful touch because it adds such a different texture to the already enticing and alluring soundscape.
The trumpet adds more to the emotional balance as well. It helps pull you into that soundscape, and I feel like it's very complimentary of the rest of the song.
Trumpets on the record are performed by Julian Hesse, who does an outstanding job really laying in memorable melodies and creating this additional vibe for certain tracks.
"Imposed Limitations" is another one that speaks volumes for the record and the artist himself, as it definitely digs into personality and observance.
Some of the lines in the track feel so connective and relatable that they could be used for part of the soundtrack to a chapter in your own life at times.
And this is exactly what I mean by being connected. He doesn't really hold back lyrically. There are no walls built around what he's trying to do, so it comes through potently.
Not only are there other vocal layers on this track during those bigger, more climactic moments, but you have octaves being sung. There are certain lines and moments where he's singing lower and higher octaves of the same melodies at the same time. This adds such a brilliant thickness to the sound.
I love the way it sounds when he does that. He only does it sort of scattered about throughout the record, but when those moments come in, I can really feel it. I found myself waiting for those moments by the time I got to the end of the record.
"Plain Obligation" is a bit of a different vibe for me. It's got a sort of swagger and swing to it. The trumpets do completely different stuff than they did on that first track, and the whole vibe of the song separates itself from a lot of the rest of the record.
You can hear a bit of an upbeat, sort of more vibrant aesthetic and approach in the performances and songwriting. There is a certain kind of brightness to this one that takes over here and there.
It's got a particular attitude, and I really latched on to that.
The EP closes with a track called "Cold Shower," and this one is intense in different ways. You can literally hear him bringing up the intensity and how he's performing on the guitar on this track. The guitar work is absolutely outstanding on this one.
It is so in-your-face, and you can really hear him slamming and pulling on those strings, letting the instrument help push the emotion.
This is definitely some amazing songwriting that comes from real places.
I know an authentic record when I hear one, and I can tell this record was definitely something that needed to happen for Cagri.
I'm certainly happy he brought Julian on because I feel like the songs with trumpet on them stand out, and the performances there are brilliant.
All in all, as I mentioned earlier, this is a very engulfing kind of record. It's more of an escape and can pull you away from whatever you're doing at the moment and put you in a completely different headspace.
So, I urge you to go escape with this record.
Dive in now, and you'll hear exactly where I'm coming from.
