A new single release from Caplin & Massiah delivers a very particular breed of honesty and I love how detailed and descriptive the lyrics can actually get as a lot of inner thought comes out because this is something that lets a track like this have character and that is something you get attached to very quickly.
"Shaped Like You" is a track that certainly displays the element of struggle in certain aspects but the listener can take that in different ways. The beauty of a song like this is that as detailed as the lyrics are, you still relate it to your own situations or your own people.
I feel like vocalist Zeetah Massiah was really able to tap into certain elements of her life and it almost seems like this would be cathartic for her to write and release while for a listener, it could be very relatable depending on how they take it.
This is something I always love because when you get that level of honesty, you start to connect with the song in different ways. This only works when there is that authenticity right there in your face and you can tell by the way her performance is vocally that this is what's happening here.
The vocals are performed with attention to detail because the harmonies are super tight and lush while emotionally you can hear that intensity and how she sings it as well so you have this combination of a seasoned singer who knows how to track vocals and make them sound big while also displaying that emotional backbone at the same time.
This is kind of a beautiful thing because you don't get it often and when you do, it's quite refreshing if you ask me.
But again, it also comes down to those lyrics. The way that she lets a lot out and freezes her lyrics is really important here as well. The lyrical phrasing and rhythm bounce off the rhythm of the track itself.
She definitely did an amazing job of letting her presence really shine through on this track and it gives such an emotional track a bit of color in its own way and I feel like it takes an experienced artist and performer to be able to pull that off and make it work.
The production and music of this track is outstanding and really adds the drive and edge to everything.
The choices of synth tones and sounds really worked wonders here because not only did it have that upfront sort of edginess to it that pushed the song forward, but it also had a bit of a vast undertone that felt a little bit cinematic in its own way as well.
Really impressive to me because you don't get that combination often either but it works really well here.
Paul Caplin did the production on this track as it seems and he obviously has an equal amount of experience most likely in terms of putting together a track that packs a punch but also provides this sort of cinematic backdrop and more expansive underbelly.
The beat was really rhythmically addicting and it makes you want to get up and dance.
These two obviously make an amazing match musically because they're able to create a track that has layers to it and really hits hard and leaves its mark But does so in a subtle sort of way so that when the track is over, you have certain parts of it bouncing around in your brain for hours.
The only way to satiate that is to go and listen to it again and this is a special aspect.
These two are already making waves and paving their own path in the pop world and upon listening to this track I checked out a previous single release called "Dance To It" which was just outstanding and also showed a little bit of a different side to how they do their thing but also kept to some of those Staples that I heard on "Shaped Like You" so, I can certainly say if you like one you like the other.
You can tell that this is a team that puts a bit of themselves into their music and really came together to create something that's got its own atmosphere and makes a statement while being honest, vibrant, and a little edgy but in a good way.
Most definitely take a listen to this track and their previous release as soon as you can and see how it affects you.
