Cell Games Drop a Massive Metal Single
A massive new track from Cell Games, it's a really heavy-handed metal approach, but does so by blending elements of progressive, melodic, and even new metal approaches, and in doing so, they create something that feels sort of spacious but also super heavy and impactful with sharp guitar riffs, and vocals that are absolutely fierce the entire time.
"Lament Configuration" comes in with an outstanding riff that's super melodic but really intelligent as well. It starts with this radio effect on the main riff, then busts right into it in full force, then breaks down into stop-and-go sections with this set of keys that perform a melody, and those synthesizers add such a cool texture to the song and absolutely build on the distance and cinematic style of the track itself.
It gets a bit heavier before breaking into the first verse, where the vocals start coming in. I certainly adore the aspect of how much they go through before the vocals come in, which is still only about 40 seconds worth of music. So, you're not waiting super long, but while you are waiting for those vocals, it goes through a series of cool changes, and you start to get an idea for the depth of the track.
There are a lot of layers here, and for them to go through all these great progressions and changes before the vocals even come in, makes you want to hear it all again. So, you are already hooked on the guitar work and the sort of accent that the band gives between the riffs, bass guitar, and drumming.
The vocals are high impact. He's really belting and getting it out there, and what's cool about it is that it's kind of half screaming and has not. This is the part that makes me think of new metal. Makes me think of bands like Limp Bizkit, for example, where it gets kind of aggressive vocally and certainly hits really hard, but it's not just full screaming, plus it's borderline wrapping at the same time. Those are key elements of new metal blended with progressive and melodic metal, and hints of hardcore as well.
It also brings to mind bands like Deftones.
If I grew up with so, I'm automatically attracted to the entire approach and aesthetic that this track gives off.
The way that the vocalist twists his tones and gets more fiery in different sections of the songs, bringing things to more of a screeching scream style, is brilliant. It really helps build the intensity of the track and all the right places and in all the right ways.
There's a brutally heavy breakdown/bridge section where everything is in full swing, and this whole section hits with such a heavy punch, but it's still all held together super well.
Even during these moments of the track where there are tons of textures and tones going on between the synths, bass guitar, main guitars, vocals, and everything else, you still have the sense of everything being very tight.
You can also hear influences from bands like Tool, Glassjaw, and more.
It's just a great blend of these massive influences coming together, and it's creating something pretty fresh at the same time. They have their own approach to it, and to me, this is one of my favorite aspects of the single.
These guys managed to create something that feels like it's all their own, but it has all these familiarities to it.
Well, it does to me because again, I grew up listening to all of these kinds of bands, and I can definitely hear how they fit those aesthetics into a track that brings everything to a different platform. They create their own soundscape by blending those influences and styles seamlessly.
Of course, one of my favorite things is the energy level because it's absolutely through the roof, but the arrangement of how the whole thing is put together is really a key factor in why it flows and works so well.
This is the track that was very well thought out in terms of that arrangement. They wanted the explosive parts to have a build, they wanted the vocals and lyrics to be heard loud and clear, they wanted to make sure that they accented all the different instrumentation, and by the way, the drumming throughout this track is astounding.
Yes, it's nice and in the pocket, but it's heavy hitting right where it needs to be, and because the drummer pushes that energy level in the more intense areas of the song, everything comes through with that heavy punch I mentioned earlier.
Without the drummer throwing in some heavier crashes or double kick fills, it just wouldn't feel the same.
So, this was a massive blast of a metal track that had a huge vastness and heavy tonality, but was done with this intelligent sensibility that is always sort of there.
It's aggressive but smart, packed with character, but in your face when it wants to be.
Just listen to the track. If you love any of the bands I mentioned earlier or just heavy rock and metal tracks that have depth, layers, and a lot going on but are super put together and give off that raw emotion, this is also for you.
Dive into this right now, you won't regret it.
