A Beautiful New Single from D'Lee
D'Lee is back with a new single, and for this one, she really reaches back to her country roots and delivers something powerful and impactful, with vocals that are just reeling with soul and honesty. You can easily tell this came from someplace very real, and that she reached into those depths and pulled that out so that she can create something that has a deeper meaning to it.
"If There's A Place" is a beautiful song that revolves around loss, in my ears.
It's a song that feels like it has a lot to do with the loss of a loved one in some way, shape, or form. It could be the end of a relationship or something even more detrimental, but either way, this performance is very emotionally bound, and because of that, you end up connecting with it in whatever way you can.
As I always like to mention, this is how I interpreted the song. Others may take it in a little bit differently, but for me, this is a song that really has a powerful message behind it and is done with a performance of the same caliber. It's all very powerful and deeply rooted.
This is coming from an artist who reaches into different styles when she feels like it. Some songs are more folk, acoustic, rock, whatever she wants to do, she kind of leans into it. Sometimes she drops more blues-oriented songs.
She is an Americana and country artist through and through, in my opinion. There's always the element of Southern-kissed tonality coming through a lot of her songs, and this song is just full-on Country. This is a powerhouse of a country ballad that is warm and comes on with this gorgeous flow.
The song features great guitar work, and these organs that are so thick and Lush, feeling any kind of space with more of that dripping soul come, and I think this is part of why the song has the kind of connection that it does.
D'Lee is always able to express herself lyrically, whether she wants to be slightly metaphorical or pretty straightforward. A lot of the time, she's very straightforward with her lyrics, and she tells a great story. She normally tells stories that you can picture in your head as the songs unfold, or just gives lyrics that have a sense of her personality attached to them all the time.
This song covers both of those angles. It is a story, and it's coming from that personal perspective, so when you listen to it, you start to imagine your situation or your people. You automatically connect a song like this with your life because of that emotional backbone, but also because of the lyrics.
The song itself is graceful and sort of elegant. I really love that about the aesthetic, because it works wonders to help set the mood for those lyrics perfectly.
You do find yourself getting wrapped up in both the music and the lyrics of this one. This is also nothing very new for the artist, but this is just taken differently.
The lyrics and the music are balanced out amazingly so that you have this almost gospel-style country and Americana tone coming from everything, and because of that, there's all that soul involved.
I also love how the song puts you in the moment. It's incredible because her performance when she hits those choruses is so bountiful and robust. She really belts out and holds the notes so perfectly that it feels like you're watching a live performance.
As the song unfolds, it comes to a sort of breakdown section. During this part of the song, she goes straight into spoken word and just sits there and describes how the song was originally written by her father, and she was a little girl when it happened. When she was young, she wondered what could cause her father to write a song like this. As she grew older and experienced life, heartbreak, and everything else involved, she really started to realize where it came from.
This is amazing. I've never heard a song that explains exactly where it came from from such an outside perspective right in the middle of the song before. It's so outside the lines and works beautifully, adding such an impact to everything.
That one section of the song makes everything more involved. It posed you in further because now you know the exact story of where the song actually was born, and how she reacted to it as she grew older.
I found this incredibly beautiful and very moving.
This was a single that almost tops anything that I've heard from her before and now I can see where all of that meaning comes from.
You definitely don't want to miss this one.
