Eliot Thompson Delivers A Warm New Single
A new single release from Elliot Thompson and brings out quite a robust soundscape that blends elements of indie and pop rock with a smooth tonality utilizing electric and acoustic guitars to bring out these almost roots style elements, all coming together with a vivacious and honest approach that gives the song a thick character which is one of the things you end up getting attached to the most.
"Icy Roads" is the track that showcases a lot of personality, and that comes through with shining colors, as does his presence as an artist throughout the track.
One of the things I love most about this song is how it blends different genres to create something that's got its own atmosphere, to an extent.
It has this warmth to it. A lot of that comes from the acoustic guitar which is sort of used as the base of the song, but it does grow out into different directions, and you get loads of additional electric guitars, especially during the bigger and more indie rock style sections, along with stomps, claps, and all this amazing percussion that helps build the drive of it all.
Throughout the course of this, you have this vocal approach that bears so much soul, and he has a wonderful Way with lyrics that can be very descriptive so that you follow along with the story, and this is something that helps deliver authenticity.
I love a song like this because it's got these layers. There's a lot of tones and textures going on throughout the entire track, and it does have this amazing pop sensibility, but it also shows that personal underbelly plenty of the time.
Songs I can express inner thought or personal attributes and also deliver that robust pop feel, still having this tonal warmth, is not something that you come across often.
This was completely refreshing, and you can tell that Elliot also has a way with arranging. The way the song is arranged lets it sort of breathe. During certain parts of the song, it breaks back down to just a kick drum, stomping along, giving the back beat for a light-hearted acoustic or electric guitar that is clean and focused on the vocals.
This is before sort of exploding back into electric guitars and more of a rock feel.
You can tell there was a lot of thought behind a lot of this track. From the arrangement, to the songwriting itself, and most of all, the tonalities of the instrumentation involved.
This is a song that lets Elliot express something and do so with heart. There was a lot of heart that flows to the veins of this track, and this is something that helps it all wrap itself around you and keep you right where it wants to.
You can tell there was plenty of emotion involved with the songwriting aspect of it all. Some of the vocal performance also displays this in different sections of the song, and this is a track that boasts different levels of intensity as it plays through.
The intense moments come in waves, and I like that.
Again, it's all alive and breathing, and the energy is completely infectious.
Throughout the entire song, you have this sort of vibrancy that is evident, and this helps the energy come through electrically. Even during parts that are calmer, you still have this vibrant aesthetic in the performance.
Some of the vocal harmonies are outstanding, but he does this tastefully. They're not overpowering or constant. He peppers the vocal harmonies throughout the track so that the robust parts of them can come through with more of a lush and full-bodied feel, which they absolutely do.
You also have piano and live percussion throughout the song, and again, this adds so many layers so that the song comes through with a depth to it and a hint of vast undertone.
To me, between the tones and textures of everything, the way the song is written, and the emotional backbone of it, it is very cinematic.
You can tell that Elliot is the kind of artist who gives little pieces of himself in his music, and that is something that lets everything feel more authentic.
You can tell this all came from some real place, and there are little elements of vulnerability as the song unfolds.
The drummer is absolutely key throughout this thing. The drumming is something that not only gives the song drive in certain sections, but it also lets everything have a natural and forward-moving flow.
The drumming lets the song feel lively in a way that wouldn't quite be there if the drumming were different.
For me, this is a track that was amazing because of all the layers of tones and textures going on, and still having everything fall together like puzzle pieces.
Between all of that and still having heart and character, this is a song that you won't soon forget.
Upon listening to this track, I took a little bit of a deep dive into the artist's back catalog on Spotify, and I stumbled across some outstanding releases.
Songs like "King Ivory" display such heavy-handed emotion, different elements of instrumentation taking the forefront, and more of that lush and cinematic pull.
There are some amazing singles along with a few full-length albums released since 2023, and all of them showcase a bit of a different side of Elliot's artistry and personality.
I would definitely start with "Icy Roads" and go backwards from there but I can tell you right now it's completely worth every minute.
This is a songwriter who puts a lot into his music and rights without walls built around him.
I think we need more music like that. Music that lets you think or feel.
Don't just take my word for it, though; take a deep dive into this track and more right now and see how it affects you.
