Goth Fight Cage return with a full EP that runs the gamut of catchy, pop-coated indie rock, with electric performances and a vibrancy that can't be touched.
This record doesn't hold much back in terms of lyrical approach. It really opens up and combines elements of light-heartedness with some seriousness and authenticity, which is something I really loved about the record as a whole.
Throughout this release, you hear the right guitar work, energy-riddled and very melodically driving vocals, all kinds of hooks that come out of nowhere, and a slew of classic indie rock influences that come into play through and through.
Untaxed Vehicle is an EP with a lot to say, and plenty to chew on.
The record wastes very little time with its first track, "tired", which comes in swinging with a sort of joyful riff and an overlaying guitar lick that adds some additional flavor and polish. All in all, it's got a little bit of garage undertone but still just feels super radio-friendly. It's the kind of track that you could hear on the radio, but back in the early 2000s. I really love this aspect as well because it makes me feel a little bit nostalgic when I hear it, but they also give things a great refresher.
The vocals are awesome throughout this record because again, the singer comes up with some really catchy melodies, even during those verses, and there are some surprises around those corners as well. In this track, there are sections where he sings octaves, where one vocal is doing the lower register and another vocal is doing the higher version of the same set of notes and melody.
This adds such a cool sort of thickness to the approach and changes the vibe of the song I've ever so slightly during those sections.
They're also sections where it breaks down into a sort of halftime bop, and the vocals hold out deeper notes throughout it, always double-tracked, which is something that also makes everything feel more robust.
One of the reasons I dig this record so much is because it pays attention to those little details. They wanted a certain aesthetic to come through, so they recorded it in a way that let the songs feel very pop-oriented and catchy, but still full-bodied with loads of layers.
"i'm not in love with you" follows that first track, and it's a perfect follow-up because it hits a little bit differently. You still have that sort of upbeat rhythm, bright guitars, and this unique sonic drive, but I love how this one has a single-track vocal with a little bit of an echo sort of effect on it.
As I said before, there's definitely a lot of thought that went into how the aesthetic would feel in the end. This is a release that pulls you into their danceable rock world for a little chunk of time, but brings in levels of honesty that you don't expect.
"girlfriend's girlfriend" has a super addicting swing rhythm to it and some great guitar work. The vocals are awesome on this one because the singer has great lyrical phrasing that bounces perfectly between those beats.
So, within the first three tracks alone, you have this indie rock record that sort of branches out in different directions but never strays too far from the formula.
"why can't you be nice to me?" sticks to that sort of formula but gives you a different overall tone. This one has a grittier, almost decimated feel to it. It's like it's more lo-fi than the other songs. This I dig as well because it changes up the feel, and you just don't expect it to happen. It gives it more of that garage grit.
The whole EP has a lot going on. But most of all, these songs come through with a very blissful kind of energy that is super infectious.
This is a five-track release that spans just over 16 minutes, so there's really no excuse for you not to listen to it.
This is for anyone who loves classic indie rock with elements of punk in its undertone, garage in its overtones, and stories to tell from a personal perspective.
Again, a lot of these tracks are super fun and danceable, and come across with a great punch.
This is not a record you want to miss if you're into any of that kind of stuff.
