A New LP from Grateful Dave
A new album release from Grateful Dave brings out a unique blend of folk, singer-songwriter, blues, jam, classic rock, hints of funk, and plenty more, all rolled into this one record that really sheds light on the character behind everything with a beautifully heavy hand so that the entire record is packed with persona and this is exactly what you get so attached to.
The album is simply self-titled, Grateful Dave, and it takes you through a soiree of wonderfully warm songs that invite you to join in the musical journey. Throughout the entire course of this record, there are certainly some surprises around its corners, but it also has this beautifully confluent approach.
With the different approaches that you hear throughout the record, some of the best kinds are the ones that are more stripped down and feel sort of in the moment.
The whole record is introduced with a track called "Judy", which is an acoustic blues track, and it's just vocals and guitar, but that's again what puts you in the moment with the song. There's nothing better than that because it feels so one-on-one and kind of personal in a sense. It all feels like a live performance that you have to watch.
I love getting that sensation by listening to a song because there's a certain liveliness to that.
I also thoroughly enjoyed how he was able to blend in this southern soul with the blues, and that was incorporated with both vocals and the guitar work.
Now, you also have this folk rock kind of Avenue that he takes as well, which he certainly does on the next track, 'Back To You and Me".
This song has more of a jammy acoustic folk style track, and you can definitely hear hints of Americana and again, that Southern tonality and its veins.
I adore how he keeps things sort of calm and peaceful while still delivering this vibrancy and his energy, which really lets the whole record shine with presence as an artist.
This track is a perfect example of exactly that. He's really jamming, super into it, you can feel the flow and the energy, it's totally infectious, and he still keeps things very balanced and never goes too over the top. That energy is always leveled out but completely authentic.
You get that from a lot of the songs on the record, and it's one of the things that becomes a staple of his style.
Then their songs like "The Way", which have some of those similar attributes but also feel more pop-coated. There's a brightness to it, the vibrancy comes through, it's colorful and alive.
It's songs like "Click and Clack" that bring out the more jammy feels. This is one of the songs that you can feel the funk, influence from classic rock, and jam bands. It's not acoustic, it's more electric guitars with effects on them, like Wawa or delivering a certain tonality that still gives that live performance essence, but with these great layers to it.
It still feels like the rest of the record. It still has a similar energy and some of those great Staples vocally, but more layers are happening, and I love that he's able to bring those kinds of surprises into the mix so that you can hear the slew of influences that he does have as an artist.
There is definitely a lot of personality getting delivered throughout the course and unfolding of this wonderfully welcoming and well-woven album.
That character or personality is how the artist gives little pieces of himself throughout the songs, and for some of them, it's storytelling, for others, it's more inner thought that comes out, but either way, you're getting something genuine, and that's kind of a beautiful thing.
This is a record that has heart. Certain songs make you feel, others make you think, but either way, you're getting something you can really chew on.
Listening to this record makes you want to see the artist perform live. It's as simple as that.
You very rarely listen to a record and get a feel for what that artist would be like in a live performance setting, but this is a complete exception to that rule.
Not only do you get that sense of live performance and what it would be like, but you want to see it. This record makes you want to go experience Grateful Dave live.
This was a beautiful record that really invited you into some of that lush personality with excellent guitar work, and several influential styles and approaches that managed to come together and create this great atmosphere.
I would definitely listen to this album from start to finish because that's the best experience. I feel like this is an album meant to be heard in full.
There's a lot to offer, and it all really feels quite authentic.
Listen to this album as soon as you can, and you won't soon regret it.
