The whole thing is bright, a little colorful, and holds very little back in the way of lyrics. There are no walls built around this song, and Jack is completely free to express himself and let all those inner thoughts out.

It also has a great groove to it, and again, that pop-coated sensation.

This track felt kind of personal! Where did it come from and what is it about?
“The Painter” is about having someone in your life who makes the heavy days feel a little lighter. For me, that person is my wife. I wrote this song a few months before we got married, during a season when I was beginning to understand just how much her presence meant to me. The chorus captures the heart of the song: “If I’m the painter, you’ll be the skyline.” A painter can always create, but a skyline gives them something tangible to draw inspiration from. It provides perspective, connection, and a sense of place—something that can quiet anxiety and make the weight of the world feel a little more manageable.
That’s what I’m trying to capture in this song: having someone you can lean on, draw inspiration from, and turn to during your toughest moments. In your darkest hours, who lifts you up? Who is always there? Who knows you better than anyone? “The Painter” is a thank you to that person. The one who can sometimes feel the weight of carrying you, but chooses to be there anyway. The one who wants to be your light when things get dark. What a gift that is.
Did you record this one at your home DAW, or at a big studio?
I recorded this record in my home studio, just like I have done with all of my music so far.
Do you normally self produce your stuff?
Yes. I am fully independent and produce everything myself in Logic. I enjoy having that hands-on involvement throughout the full process.
With songs like this, is it normal for you to have lyrics before the instrumentation? Or is it the other way around for you?
It really varies depending on the song. With “The Painter,” the instrumental came first. I had an idea for the track that I really loved, and I started improvising over it until I found a melody that clicked. From there, the lyrics seemed to find their way naturally into the melody, almost like they were meant to be there. I usually get a gut feeling when a certain phrase or line feels right, and I follow that instinct. A lot of the songwriting process for me is about finding those moments and letting the song reveal itself.
What are you performing on this song? The production is a combination of samples and midi drum kits, with all vocals performed by me.
Did this one take long to finish? This song actually started as a voice memo in 2022 when I was mumbling melodies and rough lyrics over the instrumental. I kept coming back to it, always thinking, "I've gotta finish this one day". I finally made it happen in 2026. Sometimes things just need time to blossom.
Are you the one who mixes your own material, or do you have a place you go to for that?
I produce the instrumentals myself and handle all vocal recording and timing. I have a friend who is a sound engineer, and he does all of the mixing and mastering for my tracks.
Are you doing any live performances, or is it still more of a recording project?
Right now, I'm focused on recording more music and building my audience. I am planning to do some local and smaller performance opportunities, like open mics or showcases, as I continue to grow.
What's next for you now that this is released?
I've got a lot of new music in the works. The plan is to release an EP within the next year, with a couple more singles leading up to it. There's a lot to look forward to, and I'm excited to keep building from here.
What would you say people can expect from this song?
People can expect a warm mid-tempo indie-pop record with R&B influences, filled with delicately layered harmonies, intricate vocal runs, and emotionally resonant lyrics. It's the kind of song that feels right on a late night drive or when you want something to remind you of your person. Whether that safe space is a person, a place, a special item, or something else entirely, I hope everyone can think of their own “skyline” while listening to this song. We all deserve something, or someone, that makes us feel safe enough to be fully ourselves.
