An Honest Rock Singe from Jennifer Tefft & The Strange
A new single from Jennifer Tefft & The Strange delivers a bit of a soulful but hard-hitting rock soundscape, beckoning underground early to mid-90s bands that I grew up with, laced throughout the entire track from the guitar tone and riffs to the way the vocals are delivered.
The progressions and changes throughout "Silver" are brilliant, pushing that sort of 90s rock even further, but again, it's got a bit of a heavy hand in terms of its edginess but still has pop sensibility all over it.
A lot of people would consider this to be a pop-rock single, but I consider it to be a little bit more of a blend between indie and alternative rock.
Don't get me wrong, it does have its brightness.
One example of this is the unbelievable energy throughout the entire thing. This single has a thriving energy to it that becomes super infectious very quickly.
Something about it actually even feels like a portrayal of a live performance. It's almost as if they recorded this track live in one room, at one time.
It's as though everyone involved was feeding off of each other the entire time and that synergy is just unstoppable.
Even if I'm wrong about the way they recorded it, because let's be honest, I wasn't there or anything, listening to this track definitely makes you want to go see her and the band perform it live in your face.
Those guitars don't hold much back. The tones are aggressive, but again they have this sort of bright polish to them; the performances on the instruments are outstanding as well.
The drummer is absolutely perfect for this track. The drummer of this band doesn't just really sit in the pocket, but rather electrifies the song. It's something where the drummer adds a liveliness to the track itself, and it does feel like the rest of the band pushes off of that a bit.
The guitar work across the track is pretty addictive; yes, there are heavy chords and progressions, but there are also wines and bends that give the song a lot of flavor and also build on that classic feel from the heavier 90s bands I grew up with.
As a matter of fact, you can sort of sense that each member of the band has a little bit of input in terms of the influences that come together to create songs like this one.
The drums also have this wetness to them. That snare drum has a hint of reverb that makes it sound absolutely huge, which works amazingly with the rest of the track.
Jennifer is a robust and bountiful vocalist. She's got a huge voice, and when she performs, it feels like she's singing from the heart.
She's got soul in her performance through and through, and you end up getting attached to that.
This is also a song with a lot of character lyrically. She's not holding too much back, but instead sort of letting things out and being truthful.
This gives the song tons of character, and that's another element that you end up holding on to.
She's letting herself be vulnerable just enough to catch it. She doesn't go super deep, but she lets you know that this came from a genuine place. It's an authentic track from start to finish, and if you really listen to those lyrics, you can catch on to the honesty of it.
There are loads of catchy vocal hooks, some lush harmonies giving the song a very full-bodied feel, and the whole thing is just packed with energized moments of intensity that drip from it.
The end of the song boasts some extra guitar hooks that overlap the chords and progressions, along with chants and crew vocals giving the song an almost anthemic feel.
There's definitely a lot to chew on with this single, but as I mentioned earlier, if you're not too familiar with Jennifer so far, then you should definitely start with "Silver" and work your way backwards from there, as there are some amazing releases from earlier this year and last year that also showcase different sides of your personality and songwriting alike.
'Salt and the Sea" being a perfect example.
