KOOLAID Returns With A Fresh Drum & Bass Banger
If you are unfamiliar with the musical stylings of KOOLAID, then I have the perfect introduction for you, as the DJ, rapper, and producer just dropped a brand new single that gives me a little hint of nostalgia, as it brings out classic, hyper drum and bass blended with elements of break, jungle, and more.
The new single, "clinic", doesn't waste a lot of time coming in with its ferocious and addictive beat, fast-paced and aggressive but with deep-pocketed grooves that automatically signal days of my youth, listening to this kind of stuff and dancing all night long.
Dove headfirst into this track and it didn't let me down whatsoever.
Part of the nostalgic aspect is not just that I grew up listening to the stuff but also because I loved grabbing up 303 and 808 machines, along with other drum machines, and creating stuff with them, just for fun. Just because it was purely addictive.
KOOLAID somehow captures the essence of that time for me. And anyone else who really knows what a 303 is, will completely appreciate something like this.
The beat is hard-hitting, a little fierce, and rambunctious, to say the least. It's everything you want out of a drum and bass beat.
This is all laced with different kinds of synths and keys, along with lightly coated samples that come and go, peppered throughout the track and giving it an extra life and depth.
The cool thing about songs like this one is that it has that spacious underbelly, while the upfront is punch-packing.
That is probably a big aspect of why it draws me in so much. The fact that it has vastness to it, there is this ambient feel that lets the track come through as if you are in a club listening to it live.
It's a song that gets your blood pumping and your feet moving. There's no way you're not going to want to jump around the room to this track. It's exciting and colorful, but it does have that edginess to it as well.
Classic, sped-up R&B vocals give it additional texture and tone that thrive as the song opens up, while synth pads float through the background of the track, bringing that almost distant and deepening, filmic sensation.
He uses those vocals to help build to climaxes that hit hard and explode, exactly where and when you want them to.
You can clearly tell this is someone who's been at it for quite some time. Listening to this song alone gives you that feeling, simply because he's able to arrange those builds and have the song pan out exactly the way it was intended to.
He's in full control, and if he wants to go over the top, he will. This is a song that has a natural and forward-moving flow to it.
He blends classic, old school approaches and tones with fresh ones to create an atmosphere that engulfs you but still hits with a vibrancy that's unstoppable.
You can tell he has a lot of fun with the synthesizers and keys that he's using, fitting certain ones in different spots and letting it unfold in a brilliant way.
I really did tracks like this because not only does it give me a little bout of nostalgia, but it feels good to listen to. It's invigorating and hot-wired, so that you take it with you after it's finished.

What this single captures, in a word, is energy.
KOOLAID is fully capable of capturing and harnessing this amazing energy and bringing melody and drive along with it.
The whole thing is warm yet crisp.
The mixture of tones is boisterous, and he was really able to hone in on something that I haven't felt or heard in quite some time. And when you listen to the song, it feels almost like it was effortless.
