An Interview with Lily Brooks O'Briant

A brand-new pop single release from Lily Brooks O'Briant delivers such a lush honesty amongst this semi-edgy pop soundscape. Those two elements come together to create something that's not only completely relatable but has a great drive to it.
"Fix Me" is quite a memorable track. It features a lot of fluctuation and intensities as the song unfolds which is something I loved about it because it humanizes things a lot.
Another thing that makes this track feel personal is the honesty. I think it's one of the main reasons that you get attached to this song on a lyrical level.
It feels like she's speaking out about how others may view her or possibly a relationship where the other person was trying to fix the way she was in a certain way even though she needed no fixing.
This is a very relatable and connective topic for many of us who have been in similar kinds of relationships or even situations where we felt this way.
I feel like this is cathartic or brave for Lily to release and it came from someplace real.
The soundscape and scope of this track are amazing because the production is done extremely well and brings together those elements of vastness in the undertone of the song but again, this edginess in the overtone even though it's all pop-coated.
This makes for a danceable track with some swagger and attitude and is brilliantly put together in terms of its arrangement. The song seems to breathe and feel alive. It has a natural and forward-moving flow that has a way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to.
Her vocal approach is gorgeous because not only do you get that honesty and lyrics. You also have the same level of character in the vocal approach.
She's a bit inventive and experimental with it with all kinds of harmonies that pop in and out, and a smooth approach that makes her vocals very alluring.
The way the tonality and textures come together and blend between the vocals and the music is something that makes this song stand out.
It's got a bit of a cinematic feel also and that's something that also grabs you.
This is the kind of track you can really get engulfed in and gives you the idea that this is an artist who puts pieces of herself into her music in different ways.
It takes a lot to put out a good, well-thought-out, and catchy pop song that brings together smooth color and edginess, but it's also something to be so honest and upfront and have that kind of track boast a deeper meaning as well.
This song covers all that ground seamlessly.
With the release of such a well-woven single, we wanted to speak with Lily Brooks O'Briant to talk about where this track actually came from and what may be coming up next for the artist.
Here is what happened.
Hey Lily, thank you for taking some time with us!
Thank you so much for asking me to share about my music!
I would love to start off with the new single "Fix Me"! The song came through with such a vast and edgy pop style to it! Where did this track come from?
*"Fix Me" came from that feeling of always needing to fit into someone else's vision of what or who I should be. It’s about realizing you don’t need to change for someone else because you are AMAZING. I think we’ve all felt the pressure to fit into someone’s idea of ‘perfect,’ whether in relationships or even just in everyday life. This song is my way of pushing back against that and saying, “Hey, I’m not a project you need to fix.” Musically, I wanted it to have this mix of vulnerability and strength, so it’s got a moody, emotional vibe but is empowering and bold. Think Tate McRae meets Olivia Rodrigo!
How did this all start for you as an artist?
I’ve been singing and writing songs for as long as I can remember. I wrote my first song when I was around 5 or 6—granted, it probably wasn’t great, but I loved telling stories through music. I recorded my first original song when I was 16 after my first real heartbreak (although looking back now - it wasn't really love but it felt like that at the time), and that’s when I realized how much I wanted to share my own experiences through songwriting. Music is such a powerful way to connect with people, and once I put my first song out there, I just knew this was something I had to keep doing.
What kinds of things inspire you to write songs?
A lot of my inspiration comes from personal experiences—whether it’s relationships, heartbreak, self-growth, or just figuring out life. But I also pull inspiration from stories I hear, movies, or even random moments in everyday life. Sometimes a single phrase or feeling can spark an entire song - or even a t-shirt slogan. One of the songs on my upcoming EP is called 'You Wish'. The t-shirt I was wearing the day we had the session said 'You Wish' & we thought it was a great title for a break up song and it stuck. I love that music gives me a way to process emotions and turn them into something that others can relate to.
Who is in your headphones right now?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, Lauv & Gracie Abrams lately! I love how honest their songwriting is and how they bring so much emotion into their music. Also, Taylor Swift is always in rotation—she’s such a big influence on me, especially in the way she tells stories through her lyrics.
Are you out there performing live right now?
Absolutely! I just performed for the 4th time at the Troubadour in LA at the end of January. I have been performing live for as long as I can remember because I started in musical theater when I was 5 years old. Performing original music is scary but I LOVE it & it's been an amazing experience. Connecting with fans in person and seeing how my songs resonate with them is one of the best feelings. I’m definitely planning more shows in 2025, especially leading up to my upcoming EP release this spring so stay tuned for dates & locations!
Do you enjoy performing as much as you do being in the studio?
Honestly, I love both for different reasons. Being in the studio is where I get to experiment, create, and really shape the sound of my music. But performing live is such a different kind of energy—it’s where the songs come to life. Seeing people sing along or connect with a song in real time is such a surreal and incredible feeling. So while I love the creative process in the studio, nothing beats the adrenaline and connection of performing live.
What do you think is next for you as an artist?
I’m really excited for what’s coming next! After "Fix Me," I’m releasing another single, "Looking for a Man" on March 14th, and both of these songs will lead into my third EP, "Catch Me If You Can," coming this spring. This project feels like the most authentic version of where I am now, both lyrically and musically, so I can’t wait for everyone to hear it. I wrote it last spring when I was in my 'Single girl era' and embracing a bolder sound. I’m also hoping to do more live performances and connect with as many fans as possible this year and am continuing to write and record more music.
What is it you are doing when you are not working on music?
When I’m not writing or recording, I’m probably acting, hanging out with friends, or spending time with my family & loved ones. I also love traveling, time at the gym, and getting lost in a good book or TV series - I read a LOT & I watch a lot of films. I try to take little moments to just live life. Most of my songwriting inspiration comes from real life.
Is there something you would like to express to your fans before we go?
Just a huge THANK YOU for all the love and support! Every message, every stream, every time someone connects with my music—it means the world to me. I hope Fix Me reminds you that you’re a badass already. Keep being yourself, and I can’t wait to share more music with you soon!
