Mackenzie Day Releases an Honest and Edgy EP

A new EP release from Mackenzie Day delivers a unique breed of honesty. It comes in waves of intense bouts of truth that spill out from her inner thoughts into the open world. Throughout it all, you begin to get a grasp on the character that comes through on this record, which is one of the biggest things that gets you so addicted to it.
The Addict in My Attic EP is massive and has layers you can peel back as you listen, which is extremely fun and becomes one of the more engulfing attributes of the record.
You can't exactly put your finger on one genre for this record because it has a way of bending them from song to song, but, there are elements of alternative pop, alternative rock, singer-songwriter, and more all rolled up into one big and lush release that has as much edginess as it does character.
One of the reasons the record has edginess is because not only does it come through in the soundscape with certain kinds of distortions, heavier beats, cinematic string sections, and all kinds of beautiful and graceful but somewhat haunting tonalities, but it also comes through lyrically as well.
This is an EP that showcases an artist who releases music with fewer boundaries than the norm and when you listen to these songs deeply you really can start to understand that she's letting out struggles, inner thoughts, and a lot more throughout the record.
This must have been cathartic for her to write and release but for the listener, certain tracks even feel super relatable at times because of how descriptive she can be with those lyrics as well.
That descriptive approach is also how you can almost paint vivid pictures in your head on certain tracks as she sings them.
Different levels of intensities and tonalities come through, but it all has a sort of beauty to it. It feels messy emotionally, I feel like that's what makes it so real and so genuine.
A lot of us have that messiness inside but not a lot of us know how to articulate that into words let alone words and music, so when you listen to a record like this one, you connect with it in this strange way.
This whole thing feels slightly existential at times but again, in a very relatable way.
It also feels like a concept record of sorts with each track being like a chapter in her life and this is one of the more important reasons why you should be listening to the entire record from beginning to end.
The second reason is that, if you only listen to one or two tracks from this release you're not getting anywhere near the full spectrum of what it actually has to offer.
There are so many different layers of cinematic vastness, gorgeous instrumentation, haunts, swells, and sways, along with this emotional roller coaster that takes you along with it.
There's so much to soak in that the record ends up being kind of like an escape from your own life.
This, to me, was incredibly refreshing because you just don't come across it that often.
If I say that this record is heavy I don't mean it in a rock kind of way. I mean it's heavy in an intensity kind of way and a realistic kind of way. It has a unique grittiness to it which is why it's so raw and so real.
When you're done listening to this release, you have to snap yourself back into reality again.
It's almost like reading a good book. You get the situations, some great details, the stories, but your imagination can fill certain gaps.
This was one of the more freeing releases I've heard in a very long time and I felt absolutely in love with all of these tracks.
I also really adore the almost theatrical underbelly that this record portrays. There's even an interlude in the middle of the record that it's pretty hard as well.
I think that it is delightful to hear something that showcases such beautiful and raw emotional drive because it takes bravery to do such a thing and it takes talent to be able to spin it into something so artistically bountiful and full-bodied that the songs hit you hard.
I would suggest again, listening to this whole EP, and doing so with headphones on because then you can soak in everything that's happening, all the layers, and just become part of the atmosphere that it delivers as a whole.
Listen to this now and see how it affects you.
