An Alt-Rock Soiree From Pray Silence
A brand new single from Pray Silence just dropped, and this track runs the gamut of alternative rock soundscapes that manage to blend certain elements of early 2000s screamo, with underground grunge, and so much more, utilizing unique but catchy, colorful riffs and combining that with an overlaying edginess that just feels alive.
These guys definitely capture something unique here, and it's something that I fell for pretty quickly. I'm hearing a lot of different influences, not just the early 2000s emo, screamo, grunge, and alternative, but certain other kinds of bands like McClusky.
"Kill Room" has such a unique form of catchiness to it. The riff itself is as catchy as any other part of the song, and I really dig that because it's the main thing that reels you right in.
The track actually opens up with a really cool, robust intro and string sections that breed a bit of a cinematic backbone, and then it opens up into that main riff before vocals come in.
The vocals are a part of that sort of loose, animated, theatrical, slightly over-the-top style, and it fits amazingly because it gives the song mass amounts of character.
This was such a cool soundscape. It's something that has its own atmosphere, in a sense.
The vocalist goes from this unique singing approach into bursts of screams and intensity, and it fits perfectly with the instrumentation because it adds a new layer to things. It adds to the energy level of the entire thing.
I definitely feel a synergy happening between the performances on this track as well. It's almost as if they recorded this live, in a room. Of course, I wasn't there, so I'm not sure if that's how they did it, but listening to this track makes you want to go see them perform it live.
I love a band that can capture this kind of energy and aesthetic on record this well.
The track goes through some really cool semi-augmented chords into flowing choruses and those explosive bursts of energetic hooks, emotionally backed, and sort of in your face.
There's an awesome vibrancy and vivaciousness to the track that lets it feel almost rambunctious, in a way.
Now, even though I mentioned things like how it touches on a sort of loose alt-rock vibe, underground rock approaches, and that wild performance style, this track is very well put together.
It's arranged with a lot of thought behind it, and all the parts fall together like puzzle pieces.
It's heavy but not at the same time. It hits these certain sections of grittiness and heaviness, but it's never over the top. I think the heaviest aspect of the whole thing is really the vocals.
Overall, this thing even touches on post-rock, elements of post-hardcore, and there's just something nostalgic about it for me.
This was totally radio-friendly. It feels like something that you actually would have heard back in the day on an indie radio station in a major city. Or something that you would find out about in a magazine and then go download the song off Limewire. They just have this kind of '90s/2000s feel, and it works well because they combined that brightness with the closed-fisted energy and edginess incredibly well.
The progressions and riffs are almost warm. I dig that because you just don't hear a lot of that anymore.
Now, these guys are obviously an alternative rock band and project, but I think that they branch out really well on this track. They give you some surprises around its corners, and when the song is over, you have certain sections bouncing around in your brain for hours afterwards.
The only way to satiate that is to go back and listen to it again.
The single follows another previously released slightly earlier this year called "Dragon of Chaos", which was also an amazing track, breathing a little progressive element and again really sick guitar riffs that are just engulfing.
I feel like this is a band that's paving their own path in the Rock world, and they're writing songs with fewer boundaries built around them than whatever you may be used to, while still keeping them catchy and addictive.
There's definitely a fresh approach here, but all kinds of familiarities as well.
They're not reinventing the wheel, but they're taking a slew of influences and putting them together to create something that feels like it's all their own.
Both of these tracks are more than worth your time, especially if you love rock with heart, a great edgy overtone, melodically driving approaches, and slightly anthemic undertones.
