Ryan Edward Kotler

Ryan Edward Kotler’s new single, “Queen of a Small Town,” sounds like it rolled straight out of an open garage door on a summer night. From the first few bars, I could hear traces of classic blues rock swagger. Theguitar tones that feel more worn in than retro, and a vocal delivery that doesn’t try too hard to sound soulful, because it already is.

The song is rough edged in the right ways, like it wasn’t built for perfection, just expression.

There’s a looseness to the groove that pulled me in immediately.

It doesn’t sound over rehearsed, and that’s part of the charm. Kotler leans into the timeless structure of the blues without feeling like he’s boxed in by it. The performance carries that spontaneous energy you get from a band in a room, chasing a feeling rather than chasing a hit. It feels like a raucous night out that just happened to get caught on tape.

I also liked how the solo wasn’t flashy but still had bite. There’s something refreshingly unpolished about the entire track. Kotler seems to understand that sometimes it’s the imperfections that make a song stick. If this is just the beginning, I’m looking forward to hearing where he takes things next.
