Sunstinger Drop A Massive Single Ahead of Their Upcoming EP
A new single release from Sunstinger comes in with a deep-rooted, heavy-handed, ambient, incredibly well-shaped shoegaze soundscape that starts off giving you those spacious elements and bursts into massive, heavy, grungy tones.
The ambient guitars are clean, and they play this hook that feels totally 90s, and when that kicks in with the heaviness, it all falls together like puzzle pieces, giving you this classic feel.
I'm a big fan of certain heavy rock bands from the late 90s underground music scene. There's one that particularly comes to mind when I listen to this track, and that band is Hum.
I'm definitely picking up a big Hum vibe from this song. I absolutely adore this because, again, for me it's almost nostalgic, but these guys, of course, bring loads of other elements to the table.
I think it's the bendy guitar line that really gives me that classic sensation. I just love how they burst right into those really huge, sonically massive, and driving sections without warning.
The textural feel of how the vocals flow like water throughout this landscape of heavy guitar tone is brilliant. It adds such a cool element to the song that I can feel almost haunting, in a sense.
Those vocals are very melodically driving, with long, held-out notes that drift and sway. They are absolutely drenched in reverb effect, as are some of the other instruments, all akin to a classic shoegaze approach when it comes to songwriting and mix.
It's the energy levels that these guys encompass which really give the song power.
Not only do they know how to create the right atmosphere for the genre and push its boundaries, but they're able to deliver an energy with that.
These guys are masters at sculpting sound. They are amazing at being able to build those gigantic aesthetics and combine the heaviness with the softness pretty much seamlessly.
When you read something like this, you wonder how those two come together and make sense. When you listen to the song, you can hear exactly why.
They are melodically inclined. Everything is about melody, progression, and tone.
Being able to display a deep rock and grunge tone with that very spacious underbelly is something that feels really cool.
They do this with other elements below those main guitars. The vocals add to that as well, creating something that feels like sonic waves crashing down.
Once those waves have crashed down, they sort of flow, and I feel like that's what this is all about.
Creating something that feels like it's got depth; something that has a natural flow to it, but also has a closed-fisted sort of edginess and alternative approach as well.
To me, it's an insane combination. I love how it feels when you listen to songs like this one.
Towards the end section of the song, it gets pretty explosive. There are parts where everything is full force, and it just feels like layers upon layers of guitars dipped in these different kinds of reverbs and distanced yet close at the same time.
It gets really intense. I love a track that can bring up its level of intensity and still portray this heavily melodic feel simultaneously.
It just has a soundscape that swallows you up. You are engulfed in all of these layers coming down on you, and it's such a brilliant way to display emotion and intensity.
There is a hint of this sadness in its undertone as well. That's the emotional part. It kind of cries out, in a sense.
These are the kinds of things that you can feel something from when you listen to them, especially if you're into shoegaze or heavy rock music in general.
Sunstinger is not new to the scene whatsoever, as this track is part of their forthcoming EP release set to drop sometime very soon.
This single is called "Spare Me The Rapture", signifying the deepening sense of gloom that the song does display in terms of its mood.
I am definitely anxious to hear the rest of this record and certainly hoping there's more like this all over it, which I'm sure there will be.
These guys have been paving their own path in the UK shoegaze scene and obviously look to continue doing more of that.
