An Emotional Rock Power Ballad From The Casbahs
The Casbahs return with a very warm new rock ballad that hits a certain nostalgic undertone for me, simply because it feels like the kind of song that would have been on every rock radio station in the late 90s and I think it's because of that boisterous chorus that definitely has a bit of emotional pull and the way the whole thing feels kind of cinematic and freeing, in a sense.
"Different Way Home" is a single that expresses a lot and at times, they can be a little metaphoric, but at other times they are very cut and dry. It's a song that sheds light and feels kind of anthemic with such a big chorus, but it feels very personal at the same time.
I happen to love a song that gets personal, feels a bit unafraid, and gives inner thought out for everyone to sort of soak in, while still having this melodically driving approach that feels widespread and sort of impactful.
This was a genuine indie rock power ballad, and it's done in a soft approach. The guitars aren't overly distorted or crunchy. The whole thing has a light rock feel, and they did an amazing job of layering those guitars so that you have a thickness to everything.
The track still has this vast underbelly to it, and this gives it a bit of depth. The music doesn't outstanding job of showcasing the emotion behind the lyrics and setting the mood for those lyrics as well.
This is something these guys are very good at naturally, I think.
You can tell there was a lot of attention paid to not only the tones of their instruments but also how the song was going to unfold and how that chorus was going to reel you in.
By the time you get to the second or third chorus, you find yourself singing along, and then when the song is over, that melody and whole chorus just bounce around in your brain for hours.
There's something familiar about this single. Something that makes sense to a lot of us. This song connected with me lyrically quite a bit. I think it will connect with others, too.
People interpret songs in different ways when they hear them. One person may take it completely differently from the next. That's part of the beauty of music.
There was something about this song that took me back to parts of my youth. It made me feel like this was a story from the vocalist's past and it needed to come out.
Maybe that's why it's so impactful. You can tell it came from a real place, and that authenticity is pretty strong throughout the entire track.
You have to really love a song that gives you that combination of emotional backbone and realness, along with great, powerful melodic hooks, and being able to portray this almost live performance sort of vibe by utilizing and harnessing a particular kind of energy in the performance.
These guys are just amazing and pulling stuff like this off. You can feel the emotion throughout this track and how it was completely honest.
If you're not too familiar with the Casbahs, these guys are a five-piece band from Durham, and they've been around since 2019 and have been dropping records from then on.
There's always something a little bit different to offer when they drop music.
Cool about this song is that the basis does the lead vocals on this track which I don't think they've done before, so it brings a different kind of tonality to the song altogether, but you can still feel the same familiarities that the band presents.
These guys have some amazing staples that are almost always portrayed in their songs, and this does not stray too far from those formulas.
For me, it was completely cinematic. Part of it is because of the emotional draw, but the other part is because of the way the music played out. You can easily hear this track in the scene of a film or a TV show.
Again, it's the way the music sets the mood for those lyrics and how those two come together like puzzle pieces.
This is a bit of a powerhouse of a track, but again, not over the top. It was tastefully done, and the whole thing has a kind of elegance or gracefulness to it as well that lets it have an open flow. As I mentioned at the start, it is a very freeing feeling, and that's one of the feelings that you end up holding on to even after the song is over.
This one sat with me, and I loved it.
If you are someone who loves rock music that makes you think or feel, comes from some real place, and has a certain honesty behind it, this is absolutely for you.
As I mentioned before, they do boast a bit of a 90s radio rock kind of aesthetic, but it works amazingly.
So, check this one out now, and while you're at it, backtrack through their previous releases as well. It's well more than worth your time.
