The Open Flames Deliver A New Single and Video
The Open Flames return with a new single that gives off a classic and pop rock sort of vibe but does so with the theme and a storyline attached to it so that the song comes through crisp but with lyrics that you end up getting attached to and paying attention to as you go along.
"Drop A Coin" feels inspired by a slew of influences honestly but you definitely hear a lot of that 90s and classic rock infusion with the guitars, and the vocal approach however, everything has this light pop coating to it that makes it very catchy as well alongside its edginess.
The song builds as it plays on and by the time you get to the second half of the track things start to become a little bit more intense and that has a lot to do with the premise of the song lyrically as well.
There is indeed a story, and it does have somewhat of a climax if you will and the music follows suit along with the intensity of that story.
The track keeps to a sort of bopping vibe a lot of the time and it does remind you of pop rock songs from the mid-70s or early '80s for example but it also has a liking to certain punk rock elements as well and you can hear these little bits of influences throughout the track in pieces.
The live performance feel of the track is really cool as well because it makes you feel like you just saw the performance yourself and I think that has a lot to do with the energy that's given on the track.
This single in particular, comes along with a music video and that music video really does a lot to express the premise of what the track is about in different ways. It is colorful and shot in in almost dreamlike fashion until that dream turns into more of a nightmare of course.
In case you're wondering why, the songwriter Dave Eastman explains, “We wrote the song with the metaphor of paying a tithe to a blind girl sitting at the Gates of Hell to describe the hesitation before knocking on the door of your prom date, or a wedding chapel. It was inspired by the final moments of Ian Curtis of Joy Division, before he passed into another life. The song's second half passes through the Gates to fly over a tormented landscape of Dante-esque souls who rise up howling from the fires and boiling muds of Hell.”
So you can only imagine how the song actually portrays such a concept.
This was a really addictive track because it takes classic elements that feel familiar in terms of rock music in general but also brings them a little bit outside the box both musically and lyrically.
I'm not giving everything away but once you get towards the end of the track you'll get a feel for what I mean. Things certainly do get intense, deepening, and that music video will show you exactly why.
You can tell a lot of thought was put into not only the song itself but the music video as well so that they can portray the concept behind everything the way they saw fit.
The message was an interesting one and the song was catchy with elements of edgy undertones and again, classic, punk, and alt-rock influences that let the song fall into a certain aesthetic.
What I can say is that after listening to the song, it's tough to shake it off.
I would definitely suggest listening to this track by way of watching the music video for the first time around because again, it portrays everything the way it was meant to be.
It lets you soak in the song and its premise properly.
The single is a glimpse of an upcoming album from the band which is to be called Same Time Next Year.
I for one certainly hope to hear more of this kind of stuff on the record but I'm sure that there's going to be a great array of approaches
