THE SENSE
Dropping the needle on The Sense's latest EP is like stumbling upon a hidden gem in a dusty record store. From the get-go, "I’ll Be Damned" unfurls a groove that grabs you, infiltrating the listener's soul with a celebratory vibe reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's funk intertwined with the rebellious spirit of late 60’s bands.
The band executes a complete sonic pivot with "Black Magic Marker," swapping out drum sets for bongos, electric guitars for acoustics, and bidding farewell to rock in favor of a 70’s folk aesthetic. The result is a smooth song that beckons the mind to unwind, gradually building energy into a whirlwind of organic sounds.
Enter "She’s Making Me Lonesome," a track that induces a rhythmic sway. Delicacy takes center stage as the song unfolds at its own unhurried pace, with vocals perfectly inflected to convey a touch of sorrow – a universally relatable theme that resonates with the listener. Despite the seemingly melancholic title, "Heartbreak Remains" surprisingly emanates joy. "I’ll Be Damned" stands out as a pinnacle, the remaining tracks, though divergent in genre, showcase commendable songwriting. The EP as a whole impresses with its minimalistic approach to recording, allowing each composition to breathe and speak its truth.
