An Interview With TYA
An honest and colorful new pop single from TYA comes through as a youthful and personal summer banger that has a wonderful way of building as it plays on and the more it does, the more attached you get to her and her character.
"Josephine" is an endlessly fun track that boasts a ton of heart and radio Sensibility with a really beautifully polished production that touches on an almost dream pop aesthetic with ambient since that float in the songs ether and while it all happens the song is able to create this atmosphere that you just don't want to step out of.
One of the things I really love about this song is the way that she portrays her pop sensibility and presence with such an addictive vibrancy that at the end of the song you feel like you know her a little bit better.
Everyone has to dig stuff like this because it's so catchy and so fun but also so honest and so current that it feels like something that happened at the last summer house party you were at.
TYA paints such a great picture with this track and she does it with open arms so that you can soak it in the same way and it feels good.
You can tell that there is actual heart in this track and that the artist has an absolute love for her craft when it comes down to both songwriting and performance because she really knows how to pull off that vocal style perfectly.
This was genuine, and the aesthetic was completely nailed.
This song makes you want to get up and move and if you can't then you end up shaking your ass in your seat as soon as that chorus comes on.
This track is a great example of a youth in songwriters that are creating songs with fewer boundaries than those before them but still doing it in a way that feels familiar, catchy, and incredibly fun.
It is not hard to become attached to her character on this single and for some, this might even be a great summer anthem.
With the release of such a well-woven single, we wanted to have a sit-down with TYA and find out where this actually came from and what might be coming up next for the artist.
Here's what happened.
TSWS: Okay, let's start with "Josephine"! This single had such a bright pop feel to it and was colorful and honest! Where did this track come from?
Women. It was the first unabashed love song I had ever written! I had been struggling to write love songs for years. When I had written about men, the songs had always been quite melancholy and shrouded with gender envy. I approached "Josephine" inspired by not only that iconic euphoric line in the 1959 film classic "Some Like It Hot" but also "Betty" by Taylor Swift. I just wanted to gush about a girl.
TSWS: How did this all start for you as an artist? When did you fall in love with music?
I'm a proud theatre kid at heart. My background is in musical theatre so I was introduced to most music genres through scores of shows. I LOVED it all! Jazz, Blues, Pop, Classical, Rock etc. I always half joke that watching the Green Day musical perform at the 2010 Tony Awards was my awakening into rock music.
TSWS: What kind of things really inspire other songs for you?
My inspiration is vast which is both the most frustrating and magical thing. I know it's cliche but I seriously never know where inspiration will strike. I usually come up with a title first and think to myself 'that would make an interesting song' then proceed to therapize myself about why the heck I would think that would make a good song.
TSWS: This song has some great styles on it! Can you give us some of your biggest influences musically?
Sondheim. That man has had the most influence on my style of writing. His narrative arcs and patters are unmatched in that realm of storytelling and I identify as a storyteller first and foremost.
TSWS: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?
Reading most likely, watching whatever is new on 'The National Theatre At Home', and trying to keep myself from getting too in my head!
TSWS: Who's in your headphones right now?
I've been digging' NNAVY' recently, 'Said The Whale' is always a spectacular summer vibe, and then my usual rotation of Stevie Wonder and Sondheim. ALSO, I have a playlist on spotify called "in my earholes" if you ever want to know what I'm vibing to.
TSWS: Are you doing any live performances right now?
Shhhh! No spoilers yet! There might be a big announcement coming....
TSWS: Did you record yourselves or hit a big studio for this?
Nah, no studio for this one. I am a big proponent of recording in your closet.
TSWS: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
More music! Sooner than you expect, I promise.
TSWS: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING and girls, gays, theys hit me up, I wanna chat! If you like my music, we probably have a few things in common!
