New single release from Your Best Nightmare brings a new and refreshing sense of humor to an acoustic pop soundscape built with an addictive honesty.
"Really Cute" is insanely relatable and for that reason alone it's incredibly addictive and has a way of grabbing at you keeping you right where it wants you.
This is a perfect example of an artist that says things that you think and you had or probably have before and just haven't set out loud.
This is a cute fists in the air portrayal of life experience and point of view that comes through with strength and loads of a perfect attitude.
Not since Ani Difranco's early material have you heard something with this feel and so for that it's a breath of fresh air for sure as it lets out a little of that steam.
This whole thing has some really outstanding character to it and I think that's part of what becomes so quickly infectious and it boasts so much quirky power behind it.
And when I say quirky power I'm not taking away from it at all because this song definitely speaks truth and does it right in your face which is what everyone needs to hear especially in times like these.
But the song itself has this great humorous approach that undertones those truths and that humor is undertone with aggression as well so there's layers to be peeled back even though this is a song that's totally obvious and straightforward lyrically.
I think what really appeals to the listener here is the artist's ability to speak out without boundaries because that in itself is what most people are afraid to do so to be able to do that in a song for everyone to hear is outstanding.
This was catchy, fun, honest, gritty and kept that pop format that also let it be built to her liking.
You can already tell that this is the type of artist where if you like one song you'll most likely like them all because it's her character and her approach to her songwriting that really makes it so great.
With the release of "Pretty Cute". We wanted to have a sit-down with the Your Best Nightmare to talk about where the song actually came from and what might be coming up next for her.
Here's what went down.
TSWS: Let's kick things off with "Really Cute". This single had a vivacious attitude and was
edgy and fun! Where did this track come from?
It was inspired by someone I met! I thought “what would it be like to go on a date with you??”
and I wrote it down.
TSWS: When did this all start for you? When did you really fall for music?
I grew up surrounded by music so it’s been a lifelong love for me. We had music playing
constantly growing up, and my mom would take my brother and I to the library weekly and
we could pick whatever interested us. I began taking piano lessons after I started teaching
myself songs on a little keyboard at home. I fell in love with performing on stage through my
time in theater.
TSWS: What inspires you to write a song?
I like telling stories tinged with my personal reality. “Really Cute” was the first song I wrote in
the project it's part of, and it was inspired by reality. From there, I had to build the story
sonically. Each song is a vignette in the story I wrote in my mind.
TSWS: This single has some great styles! Can you give us some of your top musical
influences?
Get ready for some whiplash on this one. I am inspired by My Chemical Romance, Ludo, Joni
Mitchell, and the Carpenters. I also love ska and punk music.
TSWS: What are you doing when you're NOT working on music?
I’m currently finishing my Master’s Degree in educational leadership; I’m super passionate
about educational equity. But I’m also an avid reader, photographer, and runner.
TSWS: Who's in your headphones right now?
I recently discovered Otoboke Beaver, and I am obsessed.
TSWS: Are you doing any live performances right now?
Yes! I’m playing in Philly on the 18th of February, and I’m heading to California in April!
TSWS: This single feels like a big undertaking, is there any advice you'd give to other up
and coming artists out there?
Go at everything you do with bold, unearned confidence.
TSWS: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
More music for sure! I’m hoping to make some merch happen, but as a one woman show I’m
pretty busy.
TSWS: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?
You are pretty darn awesome, and I would love to high five you personally one day.
