A Fresh Interview With Kay Soul
In case you missed her, let's get up close and personal with Kay Soul as the artist continuously delivers rich and passionate performances and deep tooted bangers that come from real places and all have a way of staying with you.
Kay Soul has spent the last year releasing singles and they have been outstanding showcases and examples of her vocal strength and songwriting approach being genuine and lush.
Her latest is a full EP titled Connections in which she takes you through these different chapters in what seems to be her own life and does it in the form of gorgeous R&B and soul songs that all bring a little something different to the table while remaining a standpoint for her staple sound.
The EP is coated with an impressive production and a wonderful mix of classic and new styles that seem to blend together with ease enabling her to create powerful and really cinematic tones throughout the course of the record.
Each song on the record is a different connection and how they affected her and make her feel emotionally.
Connections are important as they do affect our lives greatly and Kay has found a way to show how they do and how each one differs from the next.
It's all really quite a journey but most songs are super relatable to say the least.
You get it. You understand where she is coming from almost all the time.
That classic R&B style is perfected and you want more with each track.
Kay Soul has always been open with her music but Connections really takes the cake. She is very up front with her feelings and it all seems so personal and meaningful.
With such a great EP, we wanted to talk with her about this all.
Here's what happened.
TSWS: Let's talk about the Connections EP. This has been a long time coming it feels like. What got you to release this EP?
I always knew I wanted to release a conceptualized project. It was just a matter of the right timing. After my last album "In My Mind", I felt that it was important to examine the connections we have with ourselves and others and how these connections impact our lives.
TSWS: The record feels like chapters in the book of Kay Soul. Are these songs all based on personal experience?
I like to call my songs stories and each one of these stories is personal to me from my experiences to life observations. I believe that when you create transparency in music, the audience can connect that much better.
TSWS: How long did it take to put all of these songs together? Was it always a plan to release a full EP?
I actually began recording the EP at the end of 2020 and worked on it all 2021. I always knew it would be a full EP and wanted to take my time to make sure each song told a story that was necessary to the theme of the entire project.
TSWS: Do you write your songs with lyrics first? How do they come to you?
My songs come to me in all different ways. Sometimes it's lyrics or a melody that come first and I record it on a voicenote so I won't forget. Other times I'm in my home studio listening to tracks that my producer has sent over and I'll record demos of song ideas to develop.
TSWS: Are you going to be performing these live at all?
Yes I wil be performing the full EP at the upcoming 10th annual One Nation Under God Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. I've already added Lost Connection and Strong Connection into some past performances this year and the crowd response has been amazing.
TSWS: With this release does it feel like you've got more coming still?
It feels like I'm just getting started. I'm overflowing with music and ideas. I already have the concept for my next project which will be a full length album.
TSWS: How about a music video? Are there any plans for that in the works?
There is currently a music video for Strong Connection available on Youtube as well as a lyric video for Lost Connection. I am also working on a short that will visualize the entire EP!
TSWS: What would you say is the best part about doing what you do?
I love the process. I am a creator at heart so the best part is always coming up with new ideas and executing those ideas to completion.
TSWS: With a voice like that you must have been singing forever! Have you been singing since you were little? Did you always know you were going to do this?
Music has always been a part of my life. It has been my safe place since I was a kid. I grew up singing in church and school choirs. I starting writing songs and poetry in the 6th grade. I wasn't always sure if it would work out but I knew I had to at least give it my best effort.
TSWS: Do you feel like making music weighs in on your well being mentally? For some people it surely does.
Absolutely! As a cause warrior for mental health, I know that music can be a huge help. I find healing and peace in creating music. My goal with my music is to give listeners something that can assist in thier own personal healing journeys and offer comfort to thier heart, soul, and mind.
TSWS: Is there anything you'd like to express to fans before we go?
I am exeedingly grateful for the love and support over the years. Fans have grown with me and helped me to be more fearless in my efforts. I encourage everyone to start on thier journey today. Don't wait until the "right time". You have everything inside of you to be your best self. Your dreams are yours for the taking. So go get it!
