An Interview With King Booty Disco
An insanely fun and danceable new single from King Booty Disco delivers the funk and the good times with a lush and full-bodied array of instrumentation and some super heavy grooves that get your butt shaking in your seat from minute one.
"Star Crossed Lovers" is an absolute banger and hits the ground running with a robust energy that's undeniable and a knack for hooks and sweet spots all done with a tasteful and almost elegant jive.
The drumming on this track is outstanding and it comes with such a lively array of horn sections and guitar work, keys and vocals that all come together with the same juicy energy and with that they create this atmosphere that you just don't want to leave.
You want to stay in this song for as long as you possibly can because it's a damn good time.
This is like a song that you listen to to escape. When you don't want to think about anything that's happening in the world or in your world I should say, you pop on some music that just feels good to listen to.
This track is an absolute pinnacle of that aspect. And we all love songs like that even if we don't want to admit it.
Which by the way, badass funk songs should not be anyone's guilty pleasure. You should be very outgoing with your love for great music like this.
Without funk there would be no pop. Without pop there would be no funk. They go hand in hand and it's time to acknowledge that.
Anyway, getting back to the song... This is 100% a dance around your living room type of track and it comes with more hooks than you might be able to handle.
When's the last time you were told that? Maybe never?
Well it's true and King Booty Disco pulls it off without a hitch and more than that, they do it with charm and style.
There is tons of character in this song and that's part of what makes it so addictive.
With the release of such a fantastic single, we wanted to have a sit down with the group to talk about where this actually came from and what might be coming up next for them.
Here's what happened.
TSWS: Let's kick things off with "Star Crossed Lovers ". This single had such a classic soul-pop approach to it! Where did this track come from?
This came from a want to make some more funk based but also reach into the sci-fi stuff that I’ve always loved. I was learning some Jamiroquai stuff so I found some influence from those guys.
TSWS: When did this all start for you guys as a band?
The band started around late 2019. It was a very different endeavor for me because I have always had a passion for disco but sometimes it’s uncomfortable to go in the cheesiness of a genre. I found the musicians through past connections and even Craigslist. I told them the story of putting on a silly band where we do disco and I run around as a king of disco. It’s so silly but people have loved it and the band has been developing into the rockstars I know they are. The friends and fans we’ve made have really also helped keep this silly endeavor going.
TSWS: What inspires you to write a song?
When you’re writing to a genre, it’s a little easier because you have so much to draw from. It’s also easy to see what has worked for past bands and what I can take that just tickles my imagination and ear. What inspires me to write is try new things out or get a fun ideas going. It’s like a journey.
TSWS: This single has some great styles! Can you give us some of your top musical influences?
Thanks! It has some jamiroquai influence, some jazz/funk, and also some influences of very light prog at the end. My prog musician friends rubbed off on me.
TSWS: What are you all doing when you're NOT working on music?
Lately, I’ve been really listening to a lot of stoic philosophy while I go on jogs or I’ve been working on some self improvement. I wanna keep working to be a better person.
TSWS: Who's in all your headphones right now?
Lately it’s been some electro pop or funk or older disco pop-Yuksek-Dabeull -George Duke-Kool and the Gang-Benny Sings
TSWS: Are you guys doing any live performances right now?
Yes! It’s been fun playing live a bunch lately. The crowds have been really fun and have just been dancing and given us a lot of love. What an honor to play for people. I have so much gratitude.
TSWS: This single feels like a big undertaking, is there any advice you'd give to other up and coming bands out there?
Be comfortable failing but keep working to improve. I have failed a lot, I’m sure I’ll fail some more and I’ll keep at it. Also, find the way to validate yourself and don’t find validation from others. It’s a drug that you shouldn’t indulge in.
TSWS: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
There are some big plans coming up that I’d rather keep on the down low. ;)
TSWS: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?
Just want to say thanks for listening and supporting. We appreciate you guys who are there for us! Much love to all.
