Monolith Releases A Horror Movie Indie-Pop Opus
Monolith releases an album based on the 1985 film Fright Night and it's likely the most fun you've had in some time.
The record is a collection of synthesized keys and guitars coated with cool filters and with flowy vocals that give the songs a unique combination of indie-pop instrumentation and songwriting but it works all too well.
This album release is a huge step up from the artist's last release and shows an evolution in production.
Artists like Monolith make music without really aiming at a radio pop style or thinking that they have to crank out some single that fans of indie-pop everywhere will fall right in love with.
There is a bit less pressure in comparison to pop artists that focus on trying to write the next big thing, which in turn ends up sounding like the last 10 big things.
We're not knocking that of course. We love good pop music but the Monolith approach is a little cooler and because of the fact that there was an idea and he stuck with it, it ended up great.
The idea is to make an album dedicated to what must be a long time favorite film of the artists' and doing that meant following the path of the film itself.
This is a great take on a concept album.
From the words of the artist, "Fright Night is a re-imagining of the film. The film focuses mostly on Charlie & Amy’s plot line with Jerry & Billy as the antagonists, so I wanted to flip that and have this album mainly focus on Jerry & Billy’s perspectives. Each song, except for the title track, is a scene from the film told from one character's perspective, also in the same sequence as the film. The album mostly focuses on Billy & Jerry’s relationship and its collapse with the reincarnation of Jerry’s old love (Amy). Songs like Chemical Imbalance & From Dusk ’Til Dawn detail Billy’s dependence on Jerry, with the former being from Jerry’s perspective and the latter from Billy’s."
Some poppy singles came out of this whole thing and also some incredibly unique indie pop singles so there is a lot to drink in with this one. But well worth it.
