An Interview With Nasty Party
The latest EP release from Nasty Party hits all the classic punk rock sweet spots with a real drive and attitude to match the music and it all comes with this genuinely late 70s aesthetic and style that feels incredibly authentic.
The Monochromatic T.V. Record both killer refs and a hell of a lot of presents that's portrayed with a massive energy and you get a ton of catchy elements that show face throughout the four songs that you get to hear.
Almost everything about this is completely classic from the verses to the choruses, the guitar tones to the drumming, everything is just right in your face and catchy is all hell.
A lot of the hooks and choruses actually feel more like straight classic rock songs and punk rock but those verses definitely touch on that real deal punk rock style as well.
You get a great crossover between those two fields and everything just really feels like you've been listening to it for years.
You can tell these guys have a pure love for their craft as it's unbelievably evident with every note played.
The other thing too is there's a real heavy-handed energy bouncing aspect here. What I mean by that is that sometimes these songs feel like they were recorded live on the floor because the players seem to be feeding off of each other's energies the entire time.
This of course makes you want to go see these guys live which would be awesome because they seem like a completely face melting band. And who doesn't want to see something like that.
There's some really fun experimental aspects to the songwriting and the guitar licks are ridiculous throughout the entire record.
But really what you get attached to is the whole attitude and energy of this release.
You want to pump your fists in the air and sing along at the top of your lungs for most songs, especially the punk ones.
It's just pure adrenalized fun and done in a colorful but still edgy way.
So you get four songs with each other one reaching into different territory. Punk rock, classic rock, punk rock, classic rock.
It's incredibly fun and something that makes you want to find out as much as you can about Nasty Party.
At least we felt that way so decided to have a sit down with the band to see where the EP actually came from and what may be coming up next for the band.
Here's what went down.
TSWS: Let's kick things off with the Monochromatic TV record. This EP was fun, edgy, gritty, and high energy! Where did this record come from?
Although the most recently released, Monochromatic TV was one of the first songs written when we started Nasty Party. It was written during Gladys Berejiklian's term as Premier of New South Wales. We were lamenting the staleness & lack of vision by the Political leadership during this period... Also the general passive apathy of the voting public that still remains disengaged from everything that's happening.
TSWS: When did this all start for you guys?
We got together in 2019 after not seeing each other really since we went to music college together years ago. We both were sick of the state of Australia and wanted to start a band so we could voice our opinion and help other people understand our concerns for our country. We just wanted to make & hear music that sounded like it came from the reality we existed in.
TSWS: What inspires you to write a song?
Politics & Social issues are what motivates us to write mostly. However, we are mindful to not let this come at the expense of the more fun elements of RocknRoll. Most of the songs we have written are about what it feels like to live in Modern Australia. While the ideas within the songs are serious, we as Artists are not overly serious. We still want the songs to be fun to dance to if they were put on at a house party.
TSWS: This record has some great styles! Can you give us some of your top musical influences?
First wave punk from the 70’s and 80’s. Also the New Wave bands that emerged in the early 80’s from the freedom that punk provided the musical world. Also Post-Punk Music and it’s completely fresh take on music that had never been seen or heard before.
TSWS: What are you all doing when you're NOT working on music?
Simon Nasty is a talented Illustrator & has an online comic called "This is Zorn".
While Rhys Nasty prefers more simple hobbies like smoking cigs at the beach & counting the seagulls.
TSWS: Who's in all your headphones right now?
Dark Thoughts. Midnight Oil. LA Witch. Karies. The Fall. Cassius. The Wipers. Viagra Boys. Teen Idles. Deux. Egg Hunt. Siouxsie and the banshees. Newtown Neurotics. D.A.F.
TSWS: Are you guys doing any live performances right now?
We haven’t been able to play live at the moment as one of us is living in London for the time being. Watch this space...
TSWS: This EP feels like a big undertaking, is there any advice you'd give to other up and coming bands out there?
RocknRoll is all about the party... Whatever is the most fun is always the right path. Stay true to who you are and never make music to appease anybody but yourself. Otherwise your music isn’t you... do it even when the style of music isn’t fashionable. F**k the rules!
TSWS: What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
Our song “Sturm & Drang” has recently been included on the Punk Vinyl Benefit Compilation, “Protect Humanity”. The Vinyl compilation is now available to Order via Website: https://www.child8project.de/en-gb/shop89c91d6e
There is another Nasty Party song that will be included on a Punk Rock Compilation Vinyl Release from Spank Mag sometime around October 2023.
TSWS: Before we go, what would you like to say to fans of the music?
Thank you for listening and hopefully you’ll stay on this musical journey with us because there’s lots more to come.
