A New Single From Shining Nothing
A fresh new release from Shining Nothing brings out a cross between this post-punk and progressive approach that comes through with a sort of theatrical undertone and a robust character that has a way of reaching out and grabbing at you.
"Heavy" is the kind of track that you can really get engulfed in and then eventually washed away with the soundscape because the music and the vocals all create this sort of mood and atmosphere that you're able to swim around in.
There are elements of this song that feel like they're inspired and influenced by 1950s style songwriting but then brought into an indie rock soundscape which is a beautiful thing because from the way the trumpeters performed and written to the guitars and even backing vocals all have those vintage elements to them in terms of the composition and songwriting but then they bring in that post-punk undertone in the guitar tones themselves and added guitar lines that they bring into the mix along with the vocal attitude.
The track has an awesome way of sort of exploding into its chorus which comes through subtly anthemic but still with this classic and vintage flow to it as the vocals drift as if part of a dream and it all leaves you floating a few inches above the ground the entire time you're listening to it.
Another thing I really enjoyed about this track was the simple fact that it had musical hooks and not just vocal hooks because that's something that I've missed from all kinds of genres of music for a long time including anything rock-oriented.
This was a track that gives off such a strange sense of nostalgia and you can't put your finger on why that happens because although I mentioned that the songwriting itself has elements of 1950s and old school approaches, the song in terms of its overall sound has a much more current feel and breeds its own vibe however, the song gives you the strange sense that it could have served as the soundtrack to a chapter in your own life at some point.
This is kind of a beautiful thing to me and honestly, the whole track is performed with this graceful approach as well which I enjoyed because everything has this lush and smooth flow to it.
The energy that's on this track is well done too because it's balanced so well dynamically and each element from the vocals and the guitars, bass, and drums all have a wonderful way of complimenting each other.
This all came through with a vast undertone and some of the guitars have a perfect set level of reverb to them that makes it feel like it's performed in a small church somewhere and those are the elements in terms of the mix even that come into play when it comes to making a song have a certain aesthetic.
The actual mix on a song like this is almost everything because if the song came out dry without any reverb or any wetness, the track would sound completely different and it would lose some of that feeling and aesthetic that it was meant to have in the first place.
Everything about this track had a way of wrapping itself around me and keeping it right where I wanted to and I enjoyed it all.
Definitely take a listen to this song with some headphones on and see what effect it has on you.
