A Brilliantly Experimental Release from The Coastal
A fresh single from The Coastal brings out a blend of styles and approaches that breed both a colorful and passionate performance, with an alternative kind of edginess brought on by synthesizers, and giving a lot of extra depth and layers to the song itself.
"Take Your Time" has a lot of pop sensibility, but it's also outside the box, and it's thinking, especially in terms of songwriting, arrangement, and production.
This is something I really dig because it's almost like the future of what pop music is going to be. It bends and mends genres together seamlessly so that it's almost like you haven't quite heard anything exactly like it before, but while they are doing all this, they still hold on to the emotionally bound performances, especially vocally, along with that pop underbelly that's always there.
The song is riddled with amazing guitar and synthesizer performances, bells that ring out and add different textures, and the whole thing is just experimental but super addictive.
The vocals are really intense. The vocalist sings with such a heavy hand and has a very particular kind of vibrato that really helps pull you into the song.
Between all the instrumentation, the track has an amazing way of growing and building from where it begins.
The beat starts a little bit more mellow, still avant-garde, but grows into something a little bit more intense as the song unfolds.
The whole thing with this track is that it's got an atmosphere to it. It's got its own kind of aesthetic, and even though it gets more intense in certain sections, it exhales back down once again.
This was definitely something unique and forward-thinking, progressive, and really alluring, simply because they were able to put together so many different tones, and they made it work amazingly.
There are a lot of hooks throughout the track, but they're mainly vocal hooks. He comes up with great Melodies and progressions that sort of bounce around in your head for hours after the song has ended.
The way the whole thing is arranged is quite brilliant simply because it does have that natural flow to it, while remaining very experimental, semi-glitchy, and with its own sort of intrigue.
You can hear elements of jazz, pop, funk, rock, electronic, and more all rolled into this one single couple, which really showcases how these guys put together music that is unafraid and unbound.
This is definitely the kind of track that is built with much fewer boundaries than whatever you may be used to, but again, I feel like music is moving in this direction.
There are so many genres these days, it seems like blending them in the way that they did it, seamlessly, is something that just feels natural now.
Between the time signatures, percussion and beats, and lush instrumentation of the track being scattered about and separated this way, it's quite a refreshing piece of work, if you ask me.
There's something that's semi-familiar about it, but it's hard to put your finger on. Most of it is done with this brilliantly polished and sort of shimmering pop overcoat that just lets it come through with a certain kind of brightness.
Again, it is sort of spacious and vast at the same time. There's something strangely cinematic about it as well.
I feel like some of this doesn't just come from the instruments and production, but also from the vocals as well.
Again, these vocals are done with such a great passion, and it really has a way of wrapping itself around you and keeping you right where it wants to.
There's also a bit of elegance to this song. It's done in such a graceful way. The performances are smooth, and even though intensities have a tendency to fluctuate, it's really got a silky kind of underbelly to it that I really enjoyed.
This was a brilliant pop single that was done without walls built around it, and the experimental side of it is really what made it work so well.
I definitely can't wait to hear more from The Coastal, but for now this track will keep me at bay.
