Wonderlick Deliver A New Single As They Ramp Up for An LP Release
Wonderlick return with a new single that bears a bit of a 90s rock approach that blends a bit of contemporary with a bit of folk rock, a slightly edgy undertone, but nothing over the top, as the song shapes a very well-rounded and intriguing soundscape.
"Rhinoceros" is very interesting in its sentiment because it seems to be focusing on taking sides to an extent.
Perhaps this is a political issue and is focusing on how people view each other based on their political stance.
Of course, this is just how I took it but I can tell you now that the lyrics of the track do focus on being a bit surprised to see people change and that could be based on several things, but the fact that you can see that change is the impactful part.
This is a great song, and the guitars seem sort of vast and progressive, but the track does have this pop undertone to it with amazing vocals that are kind of animated and unique.
This is one of those bands where you can tell it's them based on that singer. He's got a particular style to the way that he performs, and it is alluring in a sense.
It's not just the vibrato and the tone, but more his actual performance energy and almost theatrical approach to it all.
You can hear some Southern tones with some of the twangy electric guitar sections that happen throughout the track, and I dig that factor because it brings in other elements and influences.
This was really catchy as well because that chorus is really embedded into the track and in turn gets stuck in your head for quite a while.
The song becomes very full-bodied and has a lot of guitars that layer on top of each other, bringing a thickness to the production, and I love how there's a combination of acoustic and electric guitars throughout this track.
Those textures go very well together, and with everything else going on, it lets the lyrics and the vocals really thrive so that you can feel the presence of that singer throughout the track.
This is a song that makes you think. You have to listen to it a few times, truly soak it in properly, but it's something that you'll sit with for a little bit.
Now, certain people may take the song differently than I did. I think whoever is listening makes a difference in terms of how those lyrics are taken.
Along with this track comes a very intriguing music video, and it's done extremely well with a combination of real and animated footage that go together and show transformations, which is a big part of this song because again, part of it's about watching someone transform into something else.
The rhinoceros is the thing the person transforms into, and throughout the video, you can kind of see that happen.
The video is actually as progressive as the song is, and I enjoyed that because it represented the song very well in terms of the lyrics and the energy.
All in all, this was a song that speaks volumes for the band because it really strives to go above and beyond with being free about the nature of people.
There's aggression in the undertone of the track, especially towards the end, and it feels like a struggle to make a choice. The song almost represents the struggle of someone having to choose, and I think that's important as well.
Not all of us wanted shoes aside or be something just because it's a part of something bigger.
This song certainly, again, represents a lot, and like I mentioned earlier, you will sit with it in terms of its meaning and how it affects you, but after you listen to the song, you see how you feel, and that will shed a lot of light on how you took it.
Wonderlick really pulled off something special here, both musically and with that incredibly outside-the-box video, and as far as we know, this is just a hint towards a full-length record that is set to drop later this summer.
As we are not strangers to the band's music, we cannot wait to hear this full LP, but for now, this track will keep us at bay.
